This camera comes with a BP 808, but the body is clearly able to hold a much larger battery. I haven't figured out the exact part number for a larger capacity battery that will fit. Where do I find that info?

The biggest one out there is BP-827. BP-8xx batteries are also encoded with Canon chip inside. So you will need to either get a Canon brand for very expensive price, or get generic brand that are decoded. For those that doesn't have info-chip inside the battery, your camera will give you a warning message everytime you switch on. Then you won't see the remaining battery level on the LCD screen.
I have two types of BP-827. This is the one with info chip

This is an cheaper alternative. It doesn't have the info-chip. SO you will get a warning message at the beginning. There is a button with 4 LED indicator on the front of the battery. You can press that button to check the remaining battery level on the battery.

The good thing for this battery is, more than it's cheaper, you can charge this battery with the AC adapter comes with your camera without using the camera.
Excellent. Thanks for the detailed response... How exactly does the cheap one work with the AC adapter?... plugs right into the battery with the same little round plug? Cool, if so.
I use Wasabi batteries from Amazon for my M4xx cams. The smaller size is exactly the size of the camera (no bump); the larger one sticks out a bit. The batteries are chipped and I have tested them with the camera against a clock, they give a few minutes extra at the end. You can read my review on Amazon. Two batteries and a charger were reasonably priced and double the recording time. I had ordered a cheaper one from eBay which worked perfect on my HF10, but not on the G10, M40, etc. The Wasabi is properly decoded (and I'm sure others will follow suit).
I am using Wasabi too, the larger one and its very impressive...I have now plenty of recording time. Good not having to worry about that. :-)
