Default Canon T3i - Cinestyle AND CineForm ??

I just purchased a Canon T3i and have been using the Technicolor CINESTYLE color profile, which of course, crushes the blacks.

I then run the footage through NeoScene CINEFORM - which gives me a converted .AVI.

HOWEVER, converting the footage through CINEFORM only FURTHER crushes the blacks - so...

QUESTION: ... should I NOT be using CINEFORM when using the CINESTYLE profile on my T3i? Does anyone else use these two together?

    Thanks in advance...

Try the Neutral style, with contrast and saturation set to minimum. Less crush, uses the full 8-bit space. Cinestyle loses at least 16 levels of blacks.

I think you are using the term "crushes the blacks" incorrectly, this normally means clips the blacks and increased contrast, when I think you mean the opposite. Neither CineStyle or CineForm will crush, clip or loss any shadow (or highlight) information. CineStyle is a workflow for a more experienced colorists, so you may want to stick with Neutral. Stick with CineForm as it will perserve the full range of the source, not matter what you shoot.

Note: In CineForm Neo (next step above NeoScene) you can set you source as CineStyle and decode to a more display friendly format using FirstLight. Makes CineStyle workflow much easier.

Correct. What Cinestyle does is lifting the blacks, so that nothing is darker than level 16. This means even the darkest black is a dark grey, unless you correct for it.

You can lift the blacks by using Neutral style, too, so Cinestyle does not give you any extra latitude. See the tests I made in another thread.
