Default New laptops with NO FireWire Input.

    Hello.

I do have 2005 Dell Inspiron Laptop with IEEE1394, but I couldn`t upgrade this machine with more than 1Gb of RAM. So it is taking forever to render my videos. I am thinking to get a new Asus Laptop with HDMI input and 8 Gb of RAM. I realized new laptops do not have FireWire inputs anymore. I`ve read something about adaptors for laptops. Which one would you suggest to get and do I stick it in slot for memory card? or I misunderstanding something?!..

    Thank you in advance!..

Make sure your new laptop has an Express Card expansion port, normally on one side. It is big and wide. With it you can obtain several useful card adaptors, one of which is the 1394 Firewire Express card. You can check Amazon and Newegg for a suitable one. Do not use a Dynex card, they are incompatible. Good luck.

I doubt your new laptop will have HDMI INPUT. Laptops still have Firewire. You just have to look a price level or two higher.

The Expresscard slot actually. Which is also on the endanger species list. You need to make sure the new laptop you get has ALL the port you need (or at least the ability to add adapters on later) before you buy it. And don't just take any one salesman's word for it, double check first. Especially since laptops are not nearly as adaptable as desktops.

There are also a few high-end laptop manufacturers that do offer HDMI inputs like Alienware' M17x.

My budget lappie from circa feb 011 has a kick-ass processor (i7 2630qm) but neither firewire (hv20 and hv30 have to bee done on older lappie) nor expresscard - but it has usb 3.0. So hear you and also feeling the pain...on the other hand it's superlight compared to my giant 18" clevo beast, and lasts around 3-5 hrs on battery, as opposed to 25 minutes...bit of a moot point as newer cams all do either CF card/SDHC card or similar..only affects us hanging on to hv...xxx series or tape-based camcorders (the last with CLEAN hdmi out! - 4:4:4 etc - shame about the chip size)...cookie
    NTSC HV20, PAL HV30.

Tape-based cameras are something of a dying breed at the consumer level. With USB 3.0 being much faster than Firewire, there's little incentive to keep it active. While this isn't much of a problem for desktops, (who can have ridiculous amounts of inputs) laptops, who are more constrained, tend to do away with old technology. As for faster rendering, look for something with more cores. The processor is what does the rendering, not the RAM.

Also, don't the HVxx cameras support USB output?

Oh. The component out is 1080p though, is it not? Could get a USB component capture card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116030 Bit on the pricey side, but that's what you get when trying to interface old technology with new technology.

I have a question re: the capture card linked above and compatibility with a laptop. I have come to the conclusion that the external Hauppauge HD PVR is the only reasonable solution for me to upload my old videos. My new laptop budget doesn't fit with finding something with firewire and/or an expresscard port. So here's the question:

    - the HD PVR specifies that your laptop must have graphics capabilities of 256 MB or greater (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html)

    - the laptop in question has an i5 2.4 GHz processor and lists a graphics card of Intel HD Graphics 3000 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+...20i5&cp=1&lp=1)

I'm not that saavy in this department. Will this laptop run the PVR?

Found that Dell Workstations ( while not cheap ) have both Expresscard slots and a Firewire port. I am picking one up, should be about 1600.00 ish this will allow me to use a Expresscard HDMI capture card and firewire for my older camera that I use for web streaming events.

Just thought I would pass this along.

I was in this situation a year ago. Get a good budget laptop and a new camera. Sell your HV.
    Trust me on this.

On the contrary, the HV XX has firewire, composite, component, and HDMI out. A collection of ports you can't find in any cameras these days. That uniqueness makes it one of the most versatile cameras ever made. It is definitely a keeper.

If you have an Express Card slot, less than 50 bucks.

The point is, newer laptops don't have express card slots.

Did you mean get a laptop with an express card slot? If that's what you meant, they don't make laptops with express card slots anymore, unless you want to pay $1500-$2500 for a computer that has that feature, but why pay that much more just for that feature? It would make more sense just to buy a new camera because it would probably be cheaper and you get a newer camera.

If you spend 1500 bucks for a laptop, it'll give you a bit more than just a FW port or an EC slot

That's not necessarily true. Also, if he isn't on a tight budget, he should just buy a better camera than a HV.

They make them, but as you've said, you just have to pay more for a higher level laptop to get that feature.
but why pay that much more just for that feature?
Because you don't just get that feature. It's the whole bundle you get with a luxury car vs a family sedan.

The trend (aka Mac) is to get as small and as light a computer as possible. That means giving you only what you absolutely need and will use regularly. Since they believe few folks will ever use firewire ports, it has gone bye bye. The larger more robust computers, do have that rule.

See if you can find a Lenovo G460 somewhere. I bought one because of it's connectivity.
