I saw it during my googling, but somehow I didn't make the connections...
I saw it more than once in my searches, but didn't make the connection straight away, either.
I only checked it out on a hunch.

Yes! It is indeed the original 1971 Get Carter, based on the novel 'Jacks return home' by Ted Lewis and directed by Mike Hodges, who was later replaced on Omen II by Don Taylor - director of The Final Countdown, Escape from Planet of the Apes and Island of Dr Moreau (two of which are time travel movies).
Remade very badly as a Sylvester Stallone vehicle, the orginal film is superior in every way. Get Carter features fantastic music and superb dialogue, as well as being a truly great slice of British gangster movie.
