Default Canon HV30 vs Panasonic DVX100b

me and my friend recently purchased new cameras primarily for filming skateboarding. I have a CANON HV30 and my friend has a PANASONIC DVX100b AND I WAS WONDERING WHICH IS BETTER! In all ways. Feel FREE to get into detail.

Shoot the same action with both cameras and compare yourself.

The 2 thousand dollar camera would be better for a variety of reasons, good quality lens for a start (Leica).
Should be easy enough to colour match and film multicam skateboard shoots with both.

A quick trip to the specifications listing of each should tell you that:

    Panasonic

    XLR ports
    3CCD
    2 built-in filters
    Gain control
    Focus ring

These are all abilities necessary in a Pro camcorder. Therefore, if you believe in the old saying that two heads are better than one, then you'll also have to agree that 3CCDs are better than one MOS? Still, if you're going to the supermarket just to pick up a bag of groceries, then a Ferrari wouldn't do that any better than a Toyota Corolla despite the fact that it costs ten times as much.

The abilities of both will cross as some point (Your skateboarding videos?), so as long as you don't go much past those requirements, the differences as far as the video, won't be worth mentioning. The The Panasonics greatest advantage is more flexibility and ease of use from it's controls. For example, external vs the dreaded menu.

Krane, you forget one minor detail: The Pana is SD.

My XL 1 is about on the same IQ level as the Pana (there are minor differences in color rendering), but my HV30's IQ beats the 3500 dollar XL in 9 out of 10 cases.

    Default Hmm

Hmm now in which lighting settings did you have this observation? Or was it in all settings? Hear the 3ccd are great at whip pans than cmos?

Does the size of the chip matter here in terms of the picture quality?

Thats to say will a 2/3 inch 3 ccd although Standard Definition look better in the same lighting conditions than the hv20-40 series?

I try to have enough light for shooting, even at events.

The XL has a 1/3" sensor (as the Pana). The HV adds gain earlier than (you'll have to manually add to) the XL, but the HV retains the colors a bit better with higher gain. High gain with the XL can be, IMHO, very ugly. You talk here about sensors and internal signal processing at least two or three generations apart though.

CCD vs. CMOS - the CCD doesn't know jello when panning or rolling shutter, but therefore has vertical smear with high contrast scenes (eg. shooting into the sun with the sun in the frame). Depends on what's more important to you.

I love my XL for its beefiness, the faux shoulder mount and the customization options, but for pure IQ, I prefer the HV.

If you want to have a real comparision between 1- and 3-chip cameras, you'd have to compare the XF100 and XF300. The latter wins, but not really by much.

    You be the judge:
