The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.
There are none; and its unlikely there will ever be any. You happy now?
You guys are like the three middle schoolers. At least that's what you remind me of: The grammar police, the misanthrope, and finally the consummate skeptic.
Were you or anyone harmed by my ideas of how things work? I assume most are adults here, not a forum of first graders. If you don't like my posts put me on ignore. That what I intend to do from now on. If you don't like my points offer a counterpoint. A variety of solutions and ideas are what forums are suppose to be all about. But you don't have the authority to censor anyone's posts. You're not a mod. here.
The counterpoint is that you are spreading bullshit and misinformation here.

Well, then you got a point.

I think it all falls apart there.

Now all that remains is to have someone buy one of these effing things and video the process of capturing from their HV to their computer via USB. Perhaps that's me. If I make it up to Bangkok soon and can find one of these POS collecting dust because it is hideously overpriced I'll do that for you all (especially Krane) - and to put the matter to rest - even if it is a shitty video shot with my 220HS in the store.
... and once you got that cable, all you have to do is to hack into your editing software and reprogram the I/O port from FW to USB. Then set the correct timeout values, as USB sends out packages, not a continuous stream. Then program the reassemblage of these packages in your editor.
Happy coding.

May I throw some coal to furnace?
Get one of these
And one of these
And it just might work !
NOT! Sorry to disapoint, but there is still no market solution to get a firewire port from USB. With USB3.0 it is possible but you still need a USB3.0 interface for firewire. Bloody hell if a simple cable could do that![]()
Hi,
I know this is an old thread, but for those that are faced with this problem now, you can allways use the Pinnalce MovieBox HD; http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSit...version+14.htm. It has been availalble for several years and does a good job on ingesting DV/HDV video. It supports Firewire's AV/C command set to control the camera when in 'Play' mode to postion the tape FF/REW/PAUSE/PLAY etc. The conversion box (MovieBox) hooks up between the Canon's Firewire port and the Computer's USB 2.0 port with the supplied cables. I don't know if it works with USB 3.0. It retails for ~$99.00 - ~$149.00.
Hope it helps someone.
New laptops being incapable of getting firewire? Nonsense. Laptops have raw interfaces just like desktops, they're just not as easily accessible.
With a business laptop, you can still get firewire with expresscard. With any other laptop, you can get firewire through your Wifi card slot.

...because wifi cards run on PCI-E.
This is not a fake device. This is made for embedded systems. It may not have friendly drivers but it definitely can work without too much stress IMO.
Usually the MPCIE slot in a notebook is fairly easy to access via the bottom panel.
There you have it, the firewire solution for all!

Or erm....buy a notebook WITH either a Firewire 400 or Expresscard slot!
That would save us from having to type out all these long winded and worn out threads.
Yea it would be nice if some of the older ports wouldn't disappear so quickly, Now that I have a older laptop but it was cutting edge gaming laptop when I got it, and editing HD video on it is taking a time toll and I am looking for a new laptop (desktop replacement) and lots of USB3 and 2 ports both nothing else. Firewire is all but gone, same with express card slots.
So it is looking like i am going to have to do a full on built to order system so I can keep using my older Panasonic GV320, my new Panasonic V700 uses an SD card and most laptops have those built in. My issue is I use the GV320 for streaming content at events, and I need something better than a web cam for this.
That mini PCI-E bit looks like a winner but it is also a bit of a kludge, it would be nice if it didn't need additional power connections (looks like a 5v hook up) and maybe a little better or cleaner way to mount ports in a laptop.
Meh, this is going to get spendy I think.

Your Pana is SD, isn't it? For streaming you should do fine with one of those RCA --> USB gizmos from Elgato, Black Magic, etc. or something like that.
We do something similar for live streams: bunch of Canon XL analog out --> Switcher --> Grass Valley ADVC 110 --> MacBook Pro. We use the analog out as our switcher stems from our S-VHS times, and we couldn't afford to update yet. It works though.

cgbier - Yea the GV320 is SD but my new v700 is 1080p@60 HD ( Love it so far ) I also use the FireWire to pull down the videos off the MiniDV tape.
Found that Dell Workstations ( while not cheap ) have both ExpressCard slots and a FireWire port. I am picking one up, should be about 1600.00 ish this will allow me to use a ExpressCard HDMI capture card and FireWire for my older camera that I use for web streaming events.
Just thought I would pass this along.

Weird, I posted and it went missing :/
Found a laptop with both FireWire and ExpressCard Dell M6600 and M6700
Nice machines, I like the aluminum and utilitarian look, and if you wanna go nuts you can drop 3k on one
