    Default Sony NEX-5N

I was in Hong Kong last week. I saw a lot of people are using this Sony NEX compact DSLR. It got my attention. I am in the market of a compact camera (with video capability). Did some research and it seems the new Sony NEX-5N is a great one. Anybody has any experience like to share?

    Here's some reviews

I'm tempting to buy one =)

Check out CheesyCam, I think he uses that camera all the time and probably has a review or tips

Well, when I check my T2i (without the battery pack) I'd say that compared to that one (with these quite "big" lenses) I'd prefer to have the T2i. Overall better quality and controls.

T2i isn't compact enough for me.

yeh, those Sony cameras are small and awesome.

NEX-7, next month, will have the EVF built-in.

Do you need a shirt-pocket compact? I'm surprised at the video quality (1080i) of my Sony Cybershot DSC-WX5...

The camera is no larger than a pack of playing cards or cigarettes, weighs 140 grams. Zoom 24-120 mm equivalent. Eminently pocketable.

NEX-7 will be a little bit big. I kinda like the look of the NEX-5.

Janke, yeah I understand they aren't be just pocket size anymore. I want more than just point and shoot.

BTW, I was browsing YouTube and found this video. I have seen this guy's reviews a lot.. but this one is quite funny. He was expecting Canon announce 5D Mark III

Just for fun, look at the specs for the WX5...

Sure, you can't change the lens, and you can't set exposure time and aperture manually, but otherwise, features abound...

But I guess you've got a DSLR anyway. So have I, but I carry the WX5 with me all the time, in my pocket...

I realized I will always have my phone in my pocket for something quick point and shoot. Thus, I want something with quality like DSLR but a little bit less size and weight. I saw a lot of people in Hong Kong using this camera.. that's how it got my interest.

I've been playing with that thing a bit in the store. About the same engine as the NEX10, which I don't take serious. It is rather tempting, but I have already two lens systems and don't want to add a third one...

OK, then! I prefer to carry my phone as a phone, and a small quality camera, too. Few phones have 12 Mpix stills and 1080i video (yet)...

For fast pictures, my blackberry serves me well (in bright light conditions only). Other than this, I can't rely on anything else than my T2i for now. I prefer to carry it with the bag and the lenses than just carry a small pocket-sized camera, which auto-adjust pretty much everything.

    I have been considering a HX9V:
    http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...4-00001d87581f

Does 60p and the videos look very good/stabilization is impressive.

Didn't realize this thread was about a carry around camera. I wouldn't want to carry around anything with a detachable lens.

Weird. A longish review but very little footage.

Stay away from the Nex-5N. It has some strange "clicking" problem that is very evident, and annoying, during recording. This sound is even more evident during playback. Sample clips I've heard even using an external mic have this present as well, although not as prominent. Sony USA is offering a "repair" to "reduce" this, but there is NO FIX for it. Speculation from people say it's the shutter, others say it's an orientation sensor. I would avoid this turd of a camera for video until Sony provides a permanent fix...not just a temporary fix to "reduce" it.

As usual, Sony has dropped the ball and given me even more reason to never want to buy their products again.

I"m aware of the clicking problem. However, I am wanting to get a compact camera for stills.

Perhaps that's why those Cinema5D guys in the first review didn't include any worthwhile footage - take the money and run.

That could be a very real possibility.

Not saying it's not a good cam, it does have decent footage (even though I despise Sony), but this is clearly a problem that should have been resolved before the cam was released to the public. Somebody, I forget who, tested multiple 5N's and they all have this problem.

    "Clicking" samples -

LB, I am strongly considering this cam mainly because the 60p video looks great.

The auto-focus is supposed to be very quick and has 16x Optical Zoom G Lens (highest grade) and very good stabilization. Some users claim it looks like a steady-cam. I read the stabilization is best at its widest, although I've seen a number of videos where it is zoomed in all the way and stays fairly steady.

It doesn't have full manual control, so you can't control aperture, etc. and some of the daylight videos seem a bit on the dark side, although it seems to do well with indoor low-light. You can do DOF on the HX9V using "spot focus". Video has 30-minute limit, even NTSC models.
You have to charge the Sony battery while keeping the battery in the camera/can also charge USB, but there are cheap chargers for sale. Still pics are supposed to be very good, but no RAW.

I've also been looking at the many Canon Powershots; ELPH, etc. I think the Sony video looks a lot better than the Canons. The Canon 24p, (which is on a lot of them), really doesn't look that great on those smaller cams. Some of the Canons do have more manual control, though.

I've also been looking at the Panasonic Lumix - some of them have great features, but again, the 60p vid quality on the Sony is really looking the best to me. It looks like there are comparable Lumix cameras in the $450 range.

So, for me, after watching many videos, reading specs and reviews - the HX9V just seems the best in its range and some of the videos look indistinguishable from a DSLR. I have a Sanyo pocket cam for the past couple of years. The video is actually decent, but I can't stand the shakiness when walking. The HX9V addresses this.

I don't know if the sale is still going on, but at FatWallet they had a deal @ BuyDig.com for $279, plus 2% FatWallet off. So about $275 and BuyDig is New Jersey, so wouldn't be taxed:

There's also the Sony HX100V/does 60p, which is about $450 and not as compact:

Got the camera today. It's quite fun to play with. Just grabbed it and took some pictures around town today. Mostly using the Intelligent Auto mode.
