I've started using my Firestore FS-C60 with my Canon HV40 for doing 8mm film transfers. It works great, but is there a setting in the HV40 menu that allows me to operate the camera without a tape?

The HV30 manual here supplies directions on Page 77.
Thanks Frank for taking the time to reference the manual. The link is for the HV30, but there isn't any difference from the HV40 in this situation. Unfortunately..this is referring to the transferring from tape or a pass-thru operation...not tapeless recording. When using a Firestore drive you can record to tape and simultaneously to the FS-C DTE. I was just hoping there was a setting on the HV40 that would allow operation without recording to tape.
For something like that, you should be able to just capture directly to a laptop or pc without recording to tape. Just hook the camera up to your laptop via firewire, start up camera, then HDVSplit and capture away........I've started using my Firestore FS-C60 with my Canon HV40 for doing 8mm film transfers. There is no such thing as "Idiot-Proof".........a good Idiot will get around that every time.
I guess I'm not being clear. Probably not many use these Firestore DTE (Direct to Edit) devices anymore http://www.videomaker.com/article/12601/. However...whether capturing to a laptop or DTE Hard Drive via firewire, you still have to configure the HV40 to operate without a tape in the camera or else you get the blinking red icon... "no tape". It works fine now when recording to both tape and DTE...but why put wear on the recording heads if you don't have to. I need someone who has done this type of capturing to comment on what to expect. I also have an XH-A1 with the same issue. I'm using the Tapeless setting on the FS-C in Synchro Slave mode. Anyone? Anyone?
You never tried to just have the camera on and record without pushing the record button? I never tried it with the HV, but when I plug my XL into the Kona card, the card captures without running the tape.
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
Ah, now I see; you are trying to do something the camera wasn't designed to do: starting a remote recorder with its own record button. No, that won't work...
Well not exactly....but you are close :-) I CAN start and stop the Firestone from the record button or remote on the HV40. This is called Synchro Slave mode and it's really cool. Each time you stop and start the camera recording, it creates a new file. However you are probably right...there's no way to have it also work with the tape removed. I just thought I'd ask....Thanks for all the replies :-)
That's part of the HDV specs, not necessarily unique to the HVEach time you stop and start the camera recording, it creates a new file![]()

I believe you didn't understand what I said earlier. You can capture directly to PC via firewire without ever recording to tape. It is very simple to do. You will start and stop the recording on your PC and the tape mechanism will never be used. You are simply capturing what the camera is seeing...........

He wants to use the camera's remote control.

In that case, I'd say he's up Shite Creek without a paddle..........

If he had a Mac, he could write an Automator routine and use the Mac R/C when recording directly to the computer.

I'm assuming you've tried without a tape? I'm sure I read somewhere the Firestore units can record from your on camera button/s without a tape in the camera. This was referring to an XL2 though, maybe it's camera specific?
Canon XL2 w/ AT875r, 20x L | Sony HDR-HC1 w/ Rode VideoMic, Opteka X-Grip
Yes...I've tried it. The Firestore will continue to record when the tape reaches the end...but there is the annoying blinking icon/warning message. Of course I can turn off the display, which I have done, it's just a pain. All that said...the convenience of the Firestore totally out-ways this minor inconvenience. BTW. XL2...very nice camera :-)
