The weird bit is how I was able to get the 503 working with the HV20 by pulling the mini jack out a little from the 'fully home' position.

Did you plug it into the in/out or the mic jack? There is some power in the in/out jack, but I could measure none from the mic jack.

Janke... could you please provide detailed photos of this procedure? Do you mean you have connected a male 1/8 inch mono jack to the mic lead before the battery box, and when not needed you plug the mic into the Zoom H1 but when you need a powered/hot signal (say to a HV20) you attach the 1/8 inch male mono jack back into the battery box/20 foot cord combo that you've attached a female 1/8 inch mono jack to?

I wonder why the signal is hotter from the H1's line power

Simple explanation: The H1 provided 2.5 volts mic power, while the mic's own battery is ony 1.5 volts.

The mic is out on loan now. So when it comes back, I'll test again to make absolutely sure I wasn't getting a signal form the cam mics.

Normally, I have the ATR plugged into the H1, worn in its nifty belt case, and just velcro the coil to the case.

That clamshell pouch in the acc. pack by itself is worth money. I use it with the H1 for lav work. It sits on your belt just like a wireless transmitter, and you can run mic and headphones into/out of it, while it still sits snugly in the pouch - no danger that it will fall out.

Can someone post a photo of what the H1 looks like wired up to someone's belt with that form fitted neoprene case? And perhaps if you would be so kind to post a photo of the case in relation to someone's hand or next to a ruler?

How bout it cg? Post up a couple photos?

LOL! In the non-metric part of the world, those plugs are often called 1/8" (but that would actually be 3.175 mm)...

LOL yeah sweet! Measure it in cg increments, as in cg's waistline and fingers I see the photos of it everywhere, but can't get a good idea of how form fitting it actually is and how much extra footprint it adds to the H1... so it would really help if I could see it in someone's average size hand and on someone's waist/belt.

Oh, sh... a CLAM shell of course... just came from work when I was typing that... The H1 fits snugly in there, so it doesn't give it much an extra footprint.

Yeah that thing is perfect! And makes all the difference in the world for my considerations with the external mic housing...

OK... I'm sold... I just passed on the 4 Tascam PR-10's and ordered a few H1's a few minutes ago and also a couple more ATR3350 lavs (Oh and a sweet carbon fiber tripod for the field, my bag just got a lot lighter!)

Anyway in my line you go with what you trust as I won't be monitoring much at all, just a quick monitor/test and set levels visually before rolling, drop it into the case, then fully zip it up by using a 90 degree elbow adapter and those dual zippers to the top where the mic will pop out.

Those headphones gave a good size reference and the pics are good! You have any pics of the belt loop/back?

The velcro is pretty solid. The accessory kit goes for 17.55. At the same time, B&H offers the H1 plus the kit for the same price - even a couple of cents cheaper - I paid for H1 by itself.

Thanks again cg! The few H1's with accessory kits I ordered are on their way to me...

I'm already plotting to cut out a window in each case and stitch or glue a heavy clear plastic in place so I can see the levels through the case without handling the recorder... that way I could monitor the continued levels without being evasive to the talent and fumbling around with the cords...

I may also try to find a way to cut a round hole for the record button and attach a rubber button to the case with contact cement. We'll see when they get here next week if it's even worth the effort.

Yes, it was a stereo-to-stereo splitter. You need a stereo-to-2x mono splitter.

Yup... got a tech shop at my Church and skilled techs that make all their own cables and wires to run throughout the building... I'll either try it myself or just ask them nicely

I prefer the gold plated but can't seem to find female mono in gold on eBay... I don't mind paying even a few bucks each for them if I could find them... anyone know of a North American (or Chinese, whatever) source with both male and female 3.5mm gold plated mono jacks/sockets? I will need at least four of each... so maybe $20-$25 total (including shipping to Canada) would be my max for 8 units total.

I will look locally at "the source" (crappy version of radioshack) today, but even this might be too obscure for them or they'll probably want $5-6 per jack if they have them

In an emergency, you can use a stereo jack as a mono jack; you connect the "hot" to the tip, leave the ring unconnected, and connect ground to the sleeve. But you have to know which "ear" connects to the tip... but a multimeter is the answer to that!

Note, this works for a jack (but may not work with a plug, depending on the jack it is plugged in.)

Went to a local electronics dealer called TipTop Electronic Supply... scored all 8 mono jacks (4 male/4 female) for $15 total... pretty good quality too Gonna wait till next week and do them all at once though.
