Did you plug it into the in/out or the mic jack? There is some power in the in/out jack, but I could measure none from the mic jack.
No need for photos, you described the procedure 100%... just make sure that the inner "hot" lead of the cable is connected to the tip of the 3.5mm (not 1/8") plug, and that the female socket is connected accordingly.
Simple explanation: The H1 provided 2.5 volts mic power, while the mic's own battery is ony 1.5 volts.

I see the photos of it everywhere, but can't get a good idea of how form fitting it actually is and how much extra footprint it adds to the H1... so it would really help if I could see it in someone's average size hand and on someone's waist/belt.
