    Default Another FCP X tutorial

This time it is from the FCP god, Larry Jordan
(the a/v quality ain't too good, but the info is)

In one thing he is, in my experience, right: The optimization and analyzing is, mostly, a waste of time. If you have to have to analyze anything, you can do it during editing. The "people" finder works somehow, sometimes, but I would only rely on it if I hadn't shot the footage myself, or it was too long ago to remember.

Hahaha!!! Do you guys know where he's sitting???? I've had the opportunity to sit in that same exact chair 3 times before!!! It's upstairs in the control booth at the Barnsdall Art Center Gallery theatre in Hollywood. I used to run sound/ lights for some gigs there. He's sitting on the sound side. You can see one of two follow spots covered up behind him. Pretty cooool.

LOL, that explains the "voice of god" comment at the beginning.

And there is another one. Paulus the Woodgnome plays around with secondary color correction using chroma masks:

... how to easily keyframe it:

    ... and a quick'n'dirty example:

    Chromakey in FCP X:

"We did spend the money on the software. That's not talent, that's wealth" - hilarious!

At least the last guy knows how to pronounce FCP X!
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

It is not for free, but RippleTraining just released a tutorial on Advanced Editing Workflow in FCP X as an iTunes d/l for $29.99 (the promo code "fcpdotco" gives you 15% off until Xmas).

In about 90 minutes Steve Martin guides you through some advanced FCP X techniques and cutting tricks. At the same time you finish a movie dialog scene, an internet promo and a corporate ID piece. Media used in the projects are downloadable for free from RippleTraining.
Included is also a transcript in form of an ebook.

I'm just download it now... give a deeper review later.

They are spitting them out like crazy: RippleTraining has another tutorial on Compositing in FCP X. For $29.99 Mark Spencer shows you in 10 lessons within some 75 minutes how easy it is to build a cheesy energy drink commercial just with FCP X on-board tools (masks, generators, chroma keying, secondary color correction,...).

Even though some of the stuff Mark shows is more comfortably to accomplish in Motion (tracking masks comes to mind), it is interesting to see how powerful and easy to use FCP X is. The tutorial (all media included) is, typically for RippleTraining, very well done, and is quality wise well beyond the usual YouTube tutorials from your average 12 year old. Well worth its money.

to the advanced tutorial two posts up: It shows some slightly advanced editing in FCP X. Actually, nothing really special, but a nice primer. Additionally to the FCP X training, it also gives some hints how to cut dialog scenes to keep the flow, and how to get more out of Ken Burns.
Nothing a somewhat accomplished editor wouldn't know, but interesting for someone who just starts editing with FCP X, or editing in general.
I'm a bit sitting on the fence if the money was well spent... the multicam workaround Steve shows is pretty nifty though.

So far, the choice of resolutions in FCP X wasn't really anything to write home about. Here's a way to roll your own resolution:

Casting shadows on keyed out elements in FCP X.

It would be much easier in Motion, but why spend 50 bucks?

    Michael Wohl on advanced audio:

Watching this makes you miss STP a bit less. If Apple re-introduces Surgical Noise Reduction in addition to Realtime Mixing in the upcoming version (hoping it's an upDATE) as promised, we have a winner.

Rippletraining has just published video tutorial on sound editing in FCP X, called Sound Editing in FCP X. For thirty bucks you get around 76 minutes of densely packed information, downloadable media to follow the training and an ePub transcript.

It seems the training is aimed at the complete noob, in FCP X as well as sound editing. Topics are: Basic cuts, playing with EQ, explanation of Compressor, Noise Gates,..., sound sweetening, Foley, and export to Logic or Pro Tools.

    From the horse's mouth:
'Sound Editing in Final Cut Pro X was created to help you improve your soundtracks, teaching you the fundamental principles behind Parametric EQs, Compressors, Noise Gates, Foley, Surround Sound and more. You'll also learn when to use Final Cut Pro X's automatic enhancement tools and when to avoid them'
