More companies jumping into the 4k market.

This stuff will eventually trickle down.

They are claiming a 'rotary' shutter- it'd be great to see a global shutter work its way down the food chain into the consumer market...

Perhaps Sony has something to do with RED’s latest philosophy change, who are now claiming they “will only announce new things when they are done and ready to ship.” This feels like the third or fourth time RED has claimed such a change in strategy, so I’ll believe it when I see it!

It's nice that even with a 65k camera they use the term camcorder.

Yeah it's tiresome, but RED doesn't care about the indie/consumer market anymore, that is to say, IF they really ever did?

Indie films have budgets like 5 million dollars, or sometimes more. Indie doesn't mean no budget.

Has nothing to do with budget or no budget, RED strung the Indie market along for the past 7 years and then basically told them to go F#@% themselves now that they are big and their focus is moving towards high end studio cameras, so I gather.

As far as I'm concerned, if I was an Indie film maker (which I'm not BTW) with any self respect, I would never look at another thing RED put on the market again, based solely on principal. Lying buggers they are. No two ways about it. There are already far better options on the way, which BTW are not just make believe fairy tales, like RED.

Exactly; it's my biggest gripe about RED also. They may be marketing geniuses, but also deceitful and con-artists for sure.

They got the likes of P. Jackson interested from the buzz created by false promises to tens of thousands of hopeful fans...who ended up getting nothing.
Totally used their excitement for marketing purposes (i.e. bait) to catch the REAL big fish.

I don't get this at all.

I would get the best camera I could for the shots I"m trying to get, that is in my budget. If I was doing slo mo, and I could afford it, I would get a phantom. If I was doing lots of FX in post, I'd want to shoot 5k so if I could afford it I'd get an Epic. Epic would also be great for HDRx if I was having trouble with blown highlights in exteriors. If I wanted to put a crash cam in a tight spot, I'd get a Canon 5d Mark II.

If the only thing I can afford is a T2i or Hv40, then I'd shoot my whole movie with that.

That really doesn't have anything to do with Red's, or any other camera manufacturer's marketing plan. A camera has a certain IQ and other features that make it appropriate for a particular job, and it has a price tag.

Why would I concern myself with anything else?

It's amazing that a 50K camera, give or take, can shoot Hollywood features. This wasn't possibly not very long ago. It brings down the cost of production, which means you can get more bang for you buck. Literally. You can spend more on explosions and less for camera equipment.

Panavision packages go for like 6K USD a day.

    You shoot 10 days, that's $60,000.00.

You can buy an Epic for that, and shoot all year long.

Umm I don't know, personal integrity, principles, values, ethics... the list continues.

Besides, WHEN it breaks, you'll have to take it to a bunch of lying thieving shysters to get it fixed... reputation goes a long way in business, so does ethics.

Aha, maybe THAT's the reason we so much garbage these days: cheap, good quality cameras with NOTHING worth shooting?
