Sorry, I couldn't describe it any easier.
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
thanks for correcting me guys, I thought it would somehow help all of us here new-age-laptop-users-without-firewire.
Bro, it's all about the SD card these days. Give me FW 400 and 800 ports over a redundant built-in 'memory card reader' any day.
That means we're old-school and vintage, almost retro in other words. All hail the mighty SD card!
Since I upgrated to my new HP G7 laptop I can't capture video from my hv30.I bought the shitty cable (firewire to usb) from ebay but it didn't work. The seller refund me.I can't do nothing else but capturing to my desktop.
At least you got your money back.
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
Unbelievable. You guys have no faith. They do work.
BTW, where is Timbit?
Faith may move mountains, but won't make a FW port out of a USB...![]()
It appears the only other way to capture in original quality apart from FireWire is to buy a USB capture card with component inputs. The HV40 came packaged with a component cable so all thats left to do is delve into the settings and make sure that the audio comes out through the headphone jack, as that uses a different cable. It supports up to 1080i which is what the corders shoot onto tape anyway. Might be a bit more finicky and less supported with some NLEs but its an option.
If you have a tower PC buy a firewire card and plug it in. Get the drivers from Microsoft, the legacy one seems to work the best.
SIMPLES.
I have an HV20 and a new computer running Windows 7 (64 bit). The Canon works fine.
I am now using Corel VideoStudio Pro X5, the "capture" mode collects the video and sorts it into shots and the Stop Motion mode uses the Canon as an input.
There is really no problem connecting an HV20-40 to the newer computers. Just get the FireWire card installed and load the drivers.
Make sure the chipset is from Texas Instruments. They seem to make the least trouble.

Hey peoples
I was also looking at this problem with my Dell L502x (i7) laptop which has no fw.
The solution is indeed the Pinnacle Moviebox.
I've got the 510 version which works without any problems in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Download the drivers from this page. I use the 64 bits version.
Both HDV-split and Edius 5.11 recognize the HV20 and import footage without any problems. So, it is not true that you can use it only with Pinnacle Studio!
Hope it helps!!

As far as I know does the movie box only export mp4 (which - snob as I am - wouldn't use for editing). Can you confirm this?
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
Nop, the moviebox doesn't do anything by itself.
The HV20 is recognized correctly as a fw device and usable in all programs.
You can use ffwd, play, stop etc exactly as if it was direct firewire.
So, I imported some HDV footage
in HDVSplit: m2t files were created with correct frame with, height , bitrate etc
in Edius: Avi files were created with Canopus HQ Fine. Also correct.
Also I imported some DV footage. No problem too in Edius, HDVsplit doesn't support it.
In both scene split worked too.
