Default HV20 and CS5.5 Capture Difficulties

Hello all, I recently purchased an HV20 and I am still learning all there is to it. In addition, I also just upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5. I had no problem capturing HDV footage from the camera in Premier CS3, but in Premier CS5.5 I am unable to do so. All of the controls work, I can play and rewind and all that stuff and I see the preview in Premier. When I go to record it seems to work fine until I stop recording. Nothing happens, no asking me to save the clip or anything. There is a .mp3 in the correct location, but it is corrupt and I am unable to bring it into Premier. I assume it has something to do with the camera's settings. I've tried recording in 60i and PF24 but I have the same issue trying to capture either way.

I experimented with another camera, an older SD JVC and I was able to capture into CS5.5 just fine with it.

All of my searching has just brought me to threads where people are attempting to capture HDV footage with the trial of CS5.5, which is a feature reserved for the full version. This is not my issue, I am running the full version.

I also tried capturing in HDV Split and it worked just fine.

    Thanks in advance.

I can't seem to edit my post any more... I hate to double post.

Turns out that the .mt2 file which plays fine in windows media player will not import into premier. I get a message that says a generic error has occurred. Perhaps my problem is premier related after all...

For future reference, the CS 5.5 trial is a FULL featured version!

That still doesn't solve the issue, lol. No matter, I found a workaround. I am just converting the video footage to a format that premier will accept. Sometimes there is a loss in quality, but I've been trying different formats for different results.

Well that was worded badly so i'm not sure what it is that you're trying to do. Are you having difficulty with capturing from your HV20? I also recently upgraded to 5.5 and mine captures just fine.

In any event, you shouldn't have to convert to anything since on of the main feature of CS 5.5 is it's ability to natively edit all of the major formats. Not only that, you shouldn't have to "work around" a brand new editor.

I'm actually experiencing the same exact problem. First of all, I'm not sure what the default capture setting should be, as none of them seem to work properly. I have an HV40 and record in the 24f mode - when I capture the video, using any sequence preset (I've tried many) it always captures as a .mp3 file. See linked photo.

As he said, I can play this video using WMP, however it will not open in Premiere.

    Any ideas?

What is your system configuration? Are you using the HVxx? If your software is on a PC you shouldn't have any problems opening in Premiere. The simplest way to capture is to open the capture screen and click capture button or play then record:

File> capture> play > record. On CS6, there is a "scene detect" icon that will capture clip as they have been laid out on your tape.

You can also check the "setting" tab > Device Control, and verify that the device control setting is set to (DV/HDV) the proper format and "Canon".

    This is correct.
