    Default Monitoring XH-A1 through HV20

    Hey guys,

Might be shooting with an XH-A1 soon....BUT it doesn't have HDMI out so I can't take it DVI into my computer monitor so I can preview on set. Don't want to use that tiny LCD. So something struck me at 4 in the morning. Would it be possible to take RGB component OUT for the XH-A1 and IN to my HV20? Then from the HV20 I take HDMI out and into the DVI on my monitor. Yes it's a big hassle but there isn't too much camera movement and plus, I can record the footage on my HV so I'll have an instant backup!

Let me know if there's anything wrong with this set up. I'm probably missing something. Nearly 5 AM here worried about my monitoring issues on set...

This would be what you need. And it's not that expensive. Local store though, but you could easily find one in one near of you.

Can you get component to DVI adapters?

    It can't, read it here.

...hence why I suggested the previous link.

What about this one Draps? Gives him a little more lee-way with his monitor if it has VGA.

    EDIT: Or perhaps this one??

I don't know, HDMI and component are Digital. In the first post he's talking about using the HV as a "component-in & HDMI-out" so I suggested the first device. This one is great, I wouldn't go backward and using VGA, unless it's necessary or that he doesn't have an HDMI post on his monitor, which isn't the case.
I think it could be usefull for other things if he never need it again for that, let's say if there's more HDMI port on the TV than component (like it was the case on my 46" Sony TV): Xbox to HDTV or DVD player to HDTV.

    Edit:

At 299.99$, he would certainly be better buying the first model I've linked...at 69.99$!

Sorry about that, I didn't see the price. I think it would be useless (and not doable) to use the HV like that. As far as I'm aware, it can only take DV/SD signals in... which would be pointless for what you want.

How does the camera not have HDMI out? I thought the XHA1 did?

Damnit!!! Still too expensive. My computer monitor only has VGA and DVI in. The only outs from the XH-A1 are the regular RCA, RGB components and BNC.

But guess what I found, for $50 bucks a 20" pro field monitor.

I think I'm going to end up getting this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Component-Conv...951381&sr=1-18

Component OUT from XH-A1 to VGA IN on my monitor.

I think you should be able to connect the XHA1 to the HV20 using a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable and record an identical HDV backup tape while monitoring throught the HDMI out of the HV20. Because the HV20 doesn't support native progressive, I think this will only work when shooting HDV 60i with the XHA1. If you get a chance to try this I would be interested in knowing the outcome.

Interesting. The thing is I don't want to wear out the fidgety firewire port on my HV. Also I just remembered that I'm probably going to use the HV20 for behind the scenes footage. So I guess the only way to go is that $40 converter. Much cheaper than buying an LCD with component inputs.

I would but I don't want a 50" TV as a monitor. My little 21" computer monitor is plenty.

    It's not that expensive...134$
At that price I would buy one instead of buying othe gear. My actual 24" display has HDMI, DVI & VGA so I can use it to monitor the footage and it's fine. But at 134$, I would buy one for sure.

Thing is, it's not my camera. So I have no need to buy a new monitor... $134 is too expensive for me anyways. The one I got was $89 (black friday) now THAT was a good deal so I jumped on it. If a converter didn't exist then I'd buy one. Actually, I could buy one somewhere then return it after the shoot. I could do that if I need to.
