I was watching this kid cuddi music video and wondered how they pulled off this effect where everyone is in slow motion except Kid Cuddi. Any idea?

Do not view me as a critic or a judge. I just tell it how I see it, valuable or not.
It's two different clips.... masked

Masking is sooooo eighties. With a fast enough computer you can do that with the RotoBrush in AE.

I have a fast enough computer, why can't I do it? D:
Oh, right, because I have CS4...
Excellent. Thanks guys!

Cheapest way:
- Buy FCPX from the app store for $299.
- Use Adobe's "cross-grade" offer which allows users of any version of FCP to purchase CS5.5 at half price.
- Return FCPX for a refund.
... or go back to school and you save even more...

Holy smokes, is that expensive. The complete Master Suite goes for some 800 or so bucks in the US on student license.

1) It is, the standalone version of AE at staples.ca goes for around 800$ (no student discount) but I can tell it really worth the price.
2) I would pay that price just for the standalone version of AE. The other software, maybe except Encore DVD/Photoshop doesn't worth it.
My personal opinion
Master Suite goes from $879 to $899 for Student / Teacher edition. Add Trapcode Particular on for $199 (regularly $399). AE CS 5.5 goes for $999 regularly.
I don't need the master Suite. I'm running Lightroom & AE on a laptop (my only machine with Win 7 64).
So, instead of paying $999 + $399, I paid $343 + $200. I'm glad I have two kids in school that I can "use" to get the academic discount. My older boy is actually getting quite a kick out of AE. We've been working together copying the effects used in TV commercials.
BTW, AE for $343 is a STEAL! It is quite possibly the most polished and powerful piece of software I've ever used.
Ok, that's a different story, Frank.
Draps, I played around with AE. It is a very powerful program. I had two problems with it: For my needs Motion is enough (M 5 is a dream for 50 bucks as standalone), and Motion is more intuitive for me. I could pop out a finished Motion project after 2 hours of playing around, while I still have to figure out the logic behind AE's UI.

I got me the Peachtree training for Motion. After the introduction chapter I could put it down. It wasn't needed anymore. I checked the Video Copilot site when I was playing with AE. It is really flabbergasting what you can do with AE, but I can't wrap my head around this &%#$@ UI.
I'm a try and error learner. For my style AE is too un-intuitive.
If I really needed it on the job, I would have to bite and really into it though. But as I said, Motion does the trick for me perfectly.

Cool. Don't go looking for a solution to a problem you don't have, right?
Yep! Maybe when I retire and have a lot of time on my hand, I might revisit AE. Just for the fun of it.

1) I learned that interface since a while and I find it pretty easy to work with, once you got how to use it.
2) It's very different from Vegas, and I use both AE and Vegas...both can do a lot of things and I like to think that both completes well together.
3) I can't tell about the books, as I rarely read them, but as for the videocopilot's tutorial, they're very powerfull and instructive. Each video as a specific purpose and all together can make a solid basis. It doesn't cost a dime, and you can learn a lot for free.
