Oh Ye Of Little Faith... Didn't I Tell Ya I Was Praying For Ya? I'm Pretty Tight With The Big Man Upstairs Ya Know
Oh well, at least Christmas will be Merry tis season...
Thanks for your prayers. While your at it, does your guy up there also have the numbers of this weekend's lottery by any chance?![]()

Dang, there goes my new MBP with Thunderbolt screen ...

I have been all over the map while considering my next purchase in the spring... DSLR T3i, XA10, HFG10, HFS30, other brand camcorders, used pro HDV and now the XF100. I have ruled out DSLR for my video needs by a long shot. When I eventually get a DSLR, it will be mostly for photography.
I have been seriously looking at camcorder specs, functions, price etc. The XF100 is the nicest prosumer camcorder I have ever seen at this price point. A camera like this at this price point wasn't possible a few years ago. This is a great little camcorder that is fit for television broadcast despite only having one chip. Its small size would be nice to work with, all the while being feature-rich. I really like that it records 50Mbps 4:2:2, which is the minimum television broadcast standards on the big national networks. There is a lot to like about this camera.
It is on my wish list... like many others I presumeI would love to hear an honest review on it before spring.
Yeah that's pretty accurate, but it's no 3CCD camera, nor full frame (obviously), but the price is still pretty great for the features/specs... I was hoping to try one out locally but nobody I know is using them here and local retail shops are also back-ordered at the moment.
By spring we should see a few more exciting releases, so don't commit to any decisions just yet if you don't have to, it's possible 2012 will be a HUGE game changer for the pro-sumer (and professional) world!
The 3-chips are a bit over-rated nowadays.no 3CCD camera, nor full frame
Full frame? PBS expects a 1/2" chip. Sony EX-1 was the minimum so far. The XF 300 is approved by the BBC. With the right color settings they even accept the 100. There was even a color setting for my Sony A1 that the BBC (cringingly) accepted for some B-roll.
CCD would have been fine, but modern CMOS are getting close.
There's a difference between cinematography and ENG. CNN Asia had used the Sony A1 for years, then they went over to JVC HM100 (my plan B), now it looks they'd love to fall for the XF100. Cameras "filmmakers" most likely wouldn't touch with a boom pole.
Every year is a huge game changer![]()

All of these cameras are the workhorses of Thai TV soap opera crews - and more DSLR's by the day. In fact, a whole mishmash of cameras and settings are used. You can see lovely, purple fringing, well-blown highlights, interlacing lines cutting up eyes and mucho moiré as they struggle to learn their trade on the fly.
Cheers.
Nice Doc lol
I realize networks must have high standards, but the technical engineers who write the tech specs on bigger networks would have all independent producers shooting on $40k plus cameras. OLN national here didn't want us shooting more than 15 percent broll with an HDV camera. We shot everything HDV on a Z1u with up to 15 percent broll from HV40 lol. Our quality to Beta was good and they accepted it... and my money.
So, paperwork for reordering of the cam is done. It's running through mill government mill now. Hopefully, I'll get to Xmas.
The backorder situation seems to relax now. The status at B&H went from "unknown" to a "ships within two to four weeks".

Nice, hope you get it soon. I will be interested to hear your input on that model, pros and cons.
We are only limited by our own lack of creativity
Thanks, Aaron. Have a couple of gigs coming up and have, besides the HV30, no camera functioning 100% right now. It's only cuts from seminars the HV will handle well, but still...

I apologize if this has been asked on this thread already, but here goes.
I own an XHA1 and HV40, and am curious to know if there is anything out there that could allow me to extract uncompressed HD footage from them? I've looked into Firestore, but am still a little fuzzy whether or not it is compatible enough to extract 24f without changing the footage at all. Any help here?
You can go direct into recorders like the Atomos Ninja for the HV40 (HDMI) and the Samurai (HD-SDI) for the XHA1.

Eeeeeeeee.
I take it the Firestore is a no go then?
Well duh tape sucks! I can not even fathom canon's choice to use them for so long. Just so many issues that can be avoided by going ss or hd.
Firestore will only give you 1440 x 1080 (HDV spec that is available over firewire)- to go uncompressed, you will need HDMI/HD SDI. There is also the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle (less sticker shock, but goes full uncompressed without an intermediate codec, using a flippin' ton of SSD space) or the UltraStudio SDI.

I have an XF105 with me on loan at the moment. Compared to my XLH1s/Nano combo, the XL still beats it image quality wise. Same operationally wise too. But we're talking about Canon's previous top of the line camera here. The XF105 image is quite good, considering its size and compromises (and for it's price). At lower gain, it holds up quote well and is sharp. By +12, it kinda mushes a bit.
How are you liking yours?

I have XF100 since last spring and love it! I used EX1 and HM100 (JVC) combo and after tweaking presets I must say XF100 beats EX1 in quality image. The bonus is IR mode, which I intend on using this spring during filming of a pilot show. XL -H1/Nano combo is twice the price, so the question is: are you getting twice as good picture? Also huge advantage is LPCM sound, which my sound guy love for post (vs AAC). Anyway, I hope someone will match CP on XF100/105 with 7D, as for now this is my biggest problem matching the two.

Sadly, I had to get Henry Posner involved after they didn't reply to my inquiries. The order is on processing status now. I should have it by the end of next week.
