    Default End of an era...

Now, it's final - my former studio is refurbished for rental use, it was a heck of a job, I did it all by myself; painting ceilings & walls, new floors laid, new kitchen cupboards - the works! I sometime woke up at 4 in the mornings, finding aching muscles I didn't even know I possessed ...

But, I expect to get more income from the rent that what I made from film work in the studio during the past two or three years...

This is what it still looked like some months ago:

Below, I'm just starting to work on the walls of another room (it was my electronics workshop) - just check out the beauuuutiful 1970s wallpaper:

Below are my two rostrum cameras being installed at the Museum (I posted a video link earlier, didn't I? Here it is again, just in case:

Oh, by the way, is anyone interested in obtaining LOTS of VHS cassettes - contents are a mystery, some are labeled, some are not... PM if interested:

Janke, that's fascinating and melancholy at the same time. All the hours you must have spent at that machine!!!!

I know what you mean about getting up in the middle of the night to keep working on something. It becomes impossible to sleep when you've got something you really really want to do. It's no doubt that same drive that made you become an animator in the first place. It's not a job for the irresolute. I made one ten minute animation back in 1966, I think it was, and it just took me over until it was finished! I can't begin to imagine the dedication required to do it on your scale!

Thanks for keeping us updated on your career moves. Speaking for myself, it's a privilege to be even remotely acquainted with a professional like you, and to have you share your achievements with us.

I liked the old setup better

...still biting myself in the anus to have given up my darkroom.

Krute, that quote referred to the refurbishing I'm currently doiung - I'm not used to manual labor...

Oh, and please hold the praise a bit, I was just lucky to get into the field at the right time & place (1970s, Finland), and with just enough talent for that time & place...

Yeah, I knew what you meant, Janks. I was just reminded of times when I've had projects of any sort that I was intensely involved with. It gets into your head and you get a burst of energy and surprise yourself.

Nuh, sorry, can't do it, Mr J. You lived my ambition, to put it simply. The career you had was the very career I would have had if I'd been allowed the choice... which I wasn't. And you did it with distinction, as your body of work shows.

So, my man, like it or not, you're something of an exemplar as far as I'm concerned. No false modesty, now. Just shut up and bask in the light of Krute's approbation. It's a rare commodity, as anyone who knows me will assure you.

Yesterday I re-visited the museum, the display of my stuff looks pretty nice, now, with a "Warning! Men at work" sign:

That looks great, Mr J. Must make you feel pretty chuffed to know that the public will see that!

The film poster for Voices of Spring, (I looked it up) what's its significance, in that context?

Thanks for sharing all these amazing pics with us Janke. Some of us have all the appreciation in the world for this stuff but don't have enough years on us to have lived it.

I don't know much about you good sir, other than that you are loved by everyone who knows anyone around here, but just seeing these pics tells me that you have some GREAT stories to tell...

None, really, except it being a nice poster sprucing up the black walls...

You know what kind of poster you could have put there, don't you.

Although, Mr Disney might have let you, but I doubt Robert Iger would.

    Pity.

Still, it doesn't really matter - the exhibit is what gets the attention anyway.

Yes, it doesn't matter - and the poster will change, every now and then. Seeing my trusty cameras in a museum sure signal the end of the film era, at least for me.

But, this is how it started, waaaay back in 1968, my very first experiment on 16 mm film - quite primitive, but I was only an eager amateur, then...

Compare with my first "real" 8-minute cartoon "Kidnapping" that I worked on for 4 years, and finished in 1974 (available on my website & YouTube channel)...

Even back then, you were telling a story. Very cute.

You can say, "It all started with a worm".

My first "animation" was made by tracing each frame from an 8mm print of Sleeping Beauty, using plain old tracing paper and a movie viewer/editor.

It was so much work, I never did it again. Just didn't have what it takes.

I did some some clay animation on still photos, but the only way to show my work was with a slide projector (about 1/2fps). Scanners weren't that far to these (C-64-)days...

Indeed. My nom de plume is in fact still "Ani-Mato", and "mato" is Finnish for worm...
