I dropped my HG10. Is there any way to reach to the footages?

Hello everyone,

I just dropped my Canon HG10 camcorder. ".On .Off-Mode" button damaged and it does not go to ".On MODE" which allows you to be able to view the recorded videos and transfers them to the comptuer. I want to get my footages in it.
I tried to take out the HDD but the HDD was different. It wasn't SATAII. I thought I could take out it and assemble it to my laptop.
I don't have a HDMI Out cable. I don't know if it is possible to transfer my vidoes to the computer. Is it possible?

I bought it on September 2, 2008 from Amazon.com. I don't think there is still warranty anymore. Is there?

If I go to the distributor...They'll probably make a over 200$ repair fee.
The used ones from $375.00.
I think I am going to get a new camcorder?! But first, I want to transfer the videos to the computer.

As you can see I'm all over the place. Maybe because of I am in shock.

Buy a hard drive enclosure (I'm pretty sure the HG10 hard drive is a Toshiba 1.8" - just look on it to check):

Carefully disconnect/take the hard drive out of the HG10 and install it inside the enclosure.

Connect the enclosure via USB. Your computer should recognize the enclosure as an external drive.

Select and copy the mts files from the camcorder hard drive (go through the camcorder hard drive folder - will be in the "stream" folder) and paste them into a folder on your computer. Or just copy and paste the whole stream folder and rename it when it's on your computer.

You just need the .mts files - which will contain both audio and video. All the other files are not needed - but leave them be on the camcorder hard drive - you are just are going to copy (not "cut") the camcorder hard drive mts files and paste them onto your computer.

...you then disconnect the enclosure, then import the mts files from the folder on your computer into an application that can read mts - like Pixela or Vegas.

HDD is a Toshina MK4009GAL. I tried to disassemble the HDD from camcorder but I couldn't. Do I have to take apart it from 1st place or 2nd place? I tried the 2nd place where I thought there was a clips that to be able to let off the cable but it didn't work. On the other hand, the 1st place, there is an insulating tape middle of the cable. Should I disassemble from that point?

At point 2 in your picture, there is a connector at the end of the cable.
You want to grab the sides of the connector and wiggle it side-to-side as you pull it off.

I had one for over 6 months and then sold it.

It's a decent build and takes very sharp video...but the low light capability wasn't too good.
I shot a band a few times in a club with it; when in low light, it resolved to a blotchy image.

Looks very good in daylight, though - depends what you are going to use it for.

My first camcorder was a Panasonic SD9 I've used it for a week and then changed with a Canon HG10. I wasn't happy with Panasonic SD9's indoor recording ability. HG10 was better and I've been used it for 3 years. Most of time, my recordings in the outdoor (Hunting-Flying birds, a lots of sky). (If you want to see my videos: http://www.youtube.com/bilalarabaci) But I want a camcorder which can record well in the indoors, too.
Now, I'm looking at http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ratings.php . At the 2nd place Canon HF G10 too expensive for me. At the 11th place Canon HF S21? How about Canon HF S21?
Basically, 1.) I want a Canon. 2.) NON-HDV (I don't want to buy cassettes continuously). 3.) It shouldn't get affected by handheld shakes so much (In this regard I wasn't happy with HG10. Audience can feel every little shakes and movements. I don't think HG10 has Image stabilizer feature even tough it says "Optical Image Stabilizer" on the camera ).

The HFS21 has a lot of manual control, a custom dial and includes the zebra stripe function which will enable you to expose the shot properly. If you are planning on making short films, etc. - it's good to have that control.

The HF S21 and the HFS200/S200/S10/S11 have the high megapixel sensor and, as a result, may suffer from poor low light. The HFS20/S200/S21 do appear better than the earlier S10/S100 in that regard. I saw some indoor low light band videos with the HF S200 (same sensor as S21) that looked pretty good.
It seems like a solidly built unit, but look at the many available online videos and ask around about the potential low light issues.

The newer HF M400/40/41 ($649 - $799) have the same HD Pro sensor as the Canon HF G10 and are advertised to do good in low light. I checked out an HFM400 (all 3 camcorders are basically the same with more/less memory) at a store and I couldn't get past the clumsiness of the touch screen. You would have to try for your self; the choices on the screen are very small and making a selection is not casual - you really have to focus your thumb/finger on getting it right. I can't imagine what you're supposed to do with that out in sunlight. And the LCD screen itself doesn't appear to be durable.
It seemed like they were going to be a great upgrade from the HFM3.., but that touch screen killed it for me. You may feel differently - check it out in the store first.

Honestly, I would say if you can find one of the older HF camcorders; a refurbished/or used in decent condition HF100, HF10 or HF11 (all flash memory with joystick menu) - those do good in low light and take great video.

Otherwise, the HFS21 touchscreen does appear to be different/potentially better than the newer HFM4..'s.
The HFS21 does have the dynamic image stabilization and dual slot memory cards. You would just have to research about low light.

Hello @net, It has been a long time, I hope you're doing fine.

I got my camcorder fixed for $107. They said "Cower assy left changed".

But this time, I rarely get "Access Error"s when I try to make recordings. I did the Error Scans with the hard disk utility software called HD Tune Pro 4.61 and the hdd has 2 red points (Damaged ones). I recorded 131 video clips and I can't reach the 42nd and 123-129th video clips. So certain spots are having bad sectors.
Do you have any ideas for how do I use this hdd with this issue? I mean, the errors at the beginnings so if I could make 2 partitions the hdd I think I could use this hdd within around 30GB.

Another approach is to rename the damaged video clips on the HD to bad1, bad2 and so forth and then don't ever erase them or reformat the drive. This should keep the bad sectors isolated until you can buy a new HD. If you are able to replace the HD, I would be interested if the firmware in the HG10 can handle a drive bigger than 40GB.

I bought a new HDD, which named Samsung HS040HB and set it up to HG10. I've tried to "Initialize the HDD" to be able use and record videos but HG10 doesn't initialize the Samsung HS040HB. I made a video about it:
