    Default Recommend a cheap DSLR?

I've been getting by without my own still camera for a while, but now I need to buy one. Can anyone recommend a good older model DSLR that I could get in good condition with a lens for about $300? I'm guessing a used DSLR will be much better than a new top of the line point and shoot, especially since they lack manual focus.

I've seen both older EOS models and the Nikon D40 in this price range on eBay, is one better than the other? I would go down to the local camera shop and look around but they aren't all that nice

How much are used T2i/550D cameras these days? People who want the newest (T3i/60D) are unloading those...

or get yourself a 1000D, it's end of lifecycle so you might be able to find it at a reduced price.

Since you're a videoist, why not get a DSLR that can also shoot HD video? Like the T2i...

Used T2i's are still going for $450+ depending on lens and accessories. Although, I would also personally recommend spending the extra money and getting one since it also does video, I got a 20D for my daughter with two lenses on Craigslist for $300 even.

I just checked eBay and all of the T2i's were over $650 with accessories. I know I just said a DSLR would be better than a point and shoot camera, but now I'm looking at a Leica D-Lux 3 because it's dead sexy

Look at the Buy & Sell over at www.fredmiranda.com. Just saw an old 10D for $150 a couple days ago. Not sure if it's still available.

Should be able to get a Rebel XS, XSi or 20D for under $300 and have money left over for a lens. Maybe even two lenses (used) if you get lucky. Might even be able to grab a 30D for just under, or around, $300. None of these shoot HD though. I have a XS (1000D) and love it. But I find myself quickly outgrowing it after 1.5 years. It's time to start saving for a 50D or 60D.

Why do I recommend Canon? Because just about any lens, with the exception of FD and m4/3, can easily be adapted to a Canon EF mount. The same can't be said for Nikon. Plus I just love Canon gear.

I got a Nikon D50 today at a local camera shop. It's pretty good for the price, and came with one 18-55mm lens.

Nikon D40 doesn't have an auto focus. If the price would be your standard, D40 is cheaper than Canon t2i. If you would go for a higger quality, Canon is better.
