    CINEFORM UPDATE:

"The engineer tells me that when HDLink is reading the file, it is decoding it at 4:2:0 (8-bit), that's why it thinks it needs to up-sample it to 10-bit. So HDLink is doing more work than it needs to. For the best quality 10-bit quality conversion of these files, you should batch convert them in After Effects."

Make of this what you will. I have to confess, I'm a bit confused. If it is "decoding it at 4:2:0" is it chucking away info? I will try the AE route in CS5. Never used this method before.

Tried the AE method. Looks nice and clean. Better than my prior attempts. CineForm is redundant for pulldown at this point as AE CS5 can remove it and doesn't even require an intermediate codec. I will still probably use it for archiving master copies, though.

So for those sitting on the fence there is good news and bad news. The good news is: if you are a PC user, you can remove pulldown and edit directly in prores HQ in CS5 and then export to the codec of your choice. The bad news: AE costs way more than a basic version of CineForm. Fortunately I already had both so I wasn't out of pocket. I hope I might have saved someone some grief on that front. Must confess I'm a bit disappointed with CineForm on this one. I expected better.

Unrelated question for anyone reading this: Does anyone know where I can get a male to male tripod adaptor? The Ninja has holes on top and bottom so you can mount it between camera and tripod. Google and ebay searches haven't come up with anything useful, which surprised me. Any help would be appreciated.

I make my own all the time from 1/4-20 threaded rod or simply cut a 1/4-20 bolt head and stem off. to do the double locking, you need two threaded collars. Buy two of these units to pirate the collars.

Now, B&H has TONS of stuff but it's hard to locate via search unless you know the magic key words. markertek even amazon help

Thanks for the reply Zephyrnoid. I'd considered making one from ready rod, but I moved to an apartment and don't have access to a workbench and tools. I'll ask the local hardware store if they can make the cuts for me.

Can someone help me? I have just purchased Atomos Nija, pulled the Hv 20 out of the cupboard. Hooked up the HDMI to the Ninja. No tape in the camera (red tape flashing icon and audio display on LCD screen). Hit record on Ninja and captured the afore mentioned info. How do I remove from the HV20 LCD screen?

Hmmmm, maybe inserting a tape will help.

Does this mean the Ninja will record all the information on the display? This would make shooting a royal pain, especially if you expose with zebra stripes.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

I record without a tape. You need to go into the menu settings to turn off the display for HDMI recording. I can't remember the exact menu item off hand but I'm sure it would turn up in a google search. Don't worry, turning off the display just stops it from being in the output. It still shows up on the camera LCD so you know what is going on.

Also, the camera has a button on the left side to clear the screen information.

... and, the camera comes with a User Manual, which explains everything. Dig a little deeper in your cupboard, and you may find it. (Iif not, it's on the web, too. Many links on this site.)

Hi Guys. this thread is almost a year old. Is that because no one is spending the money on an external recorder for the HV20? Better options?

    Better options?
    t3i? GH2?

Mmm...it's not a better option by law. Although I do think it is a valid suggestion, all depends on your next moves. Investing in a t3i or gh2 locks the investment. With such a recorder you invest in something you can use with multiple cameras, if - let me emphasize this: IF - your camera has a clean HDMI out. To me the price of the recorder is too high to justify and I can't reap the benefits, but if you were to get a D800 for example, it would be a nice investment.
Personally I like to constantly consider whether buying an addon, instead of a built-in won't harm the ergonomics too much and would be useful. Examples being my recorder with Phantom power or my EVF. I could have invested it all in one new camera, but now I can use those with the two cameras I use. (Same sort of applies here, I did not invest in one super camera but two, what I personally consider, complementary cameras.)

Regarding the original question, question is whether the HVx is still used a lot. I think quite a few did replace it for a variety of reasons and in the process abandon tape, which some considered to be, in 'modern times' too cumbersome or fragile.

Well, over at dvxuser, the D800>HDMI> Atomos solution is proving to be pretty buggy if not downright unusable. I really only recorded about 15 tapes on mine and like it enough for ample illumination. Starting to eye a replacement in about a year. Sure I get dropped frames but hey, it's paid off so
