adobe 9 hv20 capture trouble

I just got Adobe 9 so I can FINALLY do some video work after years of procrastination. But I am having sooo much trouble. Old DV tapes from another camera just wont work for me. I'm thinking it's the camera but it is playing on its monitor but the camera isn't being recognized and when I do get it to PRETEND like adobe is capturing it really isn't.
I'm also having trouble with compatible video taken with the hv20
Perhaps I need to go to an Adobe site? but I was hoping to get some advice here.

Try WinDV, it's free and it worked everytime I've used it.

I down loaded windv and it does work KIND A- it hung up. It couldn't seem to keep up or get in sync, I'll not give up on it I'll try again. It's maddening that I got adobe 9 and I'm still not doing the basics. Just want to get all those tapes in the computer then I'll go from there.

One BIG caution: If you're not powering down both computer and camcorder before connecting or disconnecting the firewire cable, begin doing so right now. Firewire is supposed to be "hot swappable" but in many camcorders it may not be. Some manuals warn of this and state to turn both off before hooking up or unhooking the cable, the firewire port on many cameras is "sensitive" to static charge and susceptible to "shorting" if the connector isn't quite aligned.

To see many cases of "fried" firewire ports do a search on this site for "fried port".

T hank's for the warning hope it isn't too late because I could only get the windv to work once.
When it started I got nothing on its monitor then after stopping and starting it, while trying to capture, I was able to see the video and IT WORKED. But now I get no picture on its monitor and, of course, it isn't capturing anything. I' m going to try a startup now.

If there's any way you can try using another computer that could give you an indication of whether or not the firewire port is working. If the computer does not "see" the camcorder or "recognize" it, that is one indication the firewire port may be "fried".

Video will still play on the LCD screen, but just will not go out over firewire and firewire is pretty much the only way to "capture" with most NLE's.

I never had it happen to me but have read many times the laments of others. One gal "fried" 5 expensive camcorders, one after another, trying to find one she could capture from. Shorted cable probably or bad port on the computer maybe, but the only safe way to hookup or disconnect is with both camera and computer powered OFF.

This is one potential issue that led me to jump to flash media very shortly after Canon came out with a model I could live with, the HF100.

GOOD NEWS
My HV20 is fine. I couldn't get anything from WINDV so in a panic I went to Adobe premier 9 and it worked.???? I find it hard to understand why in 2011 there isn't a cheap easy way to capture. Perhaps it's just me and after I keep messing with it something will click and it will be a no brainer. One can only hope.

I think I know one of my problems. I shot a lot of 24fps with the hv20 and I don't think it's supported with premiere 9. nothin but trouble and tribulation. I know I should have come here first, instead of just buying, but I'm a 70 year old impulsive being. And old dogs never learn.
I will try and sort out the 24fps but that may be hard on those shot on 16:9 format. Then again if it don't work I will figure its 24fps.

I just changed firewire cables and ALL IS WELL.
I had just bought that bad cable from best buy. That's why I figured it was good but it was a cheapy
