The 5D MkII is expensive, it's full frame and so the EF ($650 and up, up, up) zooms with wide angle give real wide angle. My 17-40mm L on a 5D MkII body would really "sing" as a wide angle (on the 7D & T2i the 17mm end still is wide enough to be useful).

The 5D MkII is said to be a tad (small tad) better in low light but in a practical sense it's not much.

The T2i has been dropping a bit in price with the news of newer releases so it's becoming a fair value, $769 today at B&H. There will, of course, be other expenses but the separate audio recorder may not be necessary if the Magic Lantern firmware proves stable (reports indicate with ML you can turn off AGC and effect manual control of recording levels). And the T2i does have some improvements over the 5D MkII

Just some things to think on.

Only to a much more limited extent. Much fewer moving parts and mechanisms to go wrong. I don't think I would buy any camcorder without inspecting and testing. Too many reports of people buying off ebay and getting something with a problem. But the tape based will be far more prone to trouble due to the complexity of tape mechanisms.

In my 20 in the air force, I worked almost daily with communications gear and associated recorders. I saw tape mechanism after tape mechanism go down for repair, they can only go for so long before something gets out of "whack" and when Canon came out with the HF100 I "jumped ship" fast and haven't looked back since.

It's easier to just get a 20 dollar remote and see what happens.
The remotes I have with the HF100's do not have the joystick functions on them, nor do I remember any such with the remote for the HV20 I used to have.

I would not pay for repairs on it, the seller seems to have "dumped" a camera with a problem on the buyer. I'd go hard and fast for a refund.

As far as "dishing out $2000", this statement shows how misinformed you are. The T2i is listed at $769 at B&H, it seems to have gone back up to $849 at amazon.

If it seems like I am challenging you here, I will always challenge those I see trying to convince kids with misinformation. Offer verifiable facts and I back off.

    THE THREAD TITLE SUCKS!

Giving threads descriptive titles helps YOU much more, as it drives people interested in that subject to your thread,
probably more likely to give you a good answer.

    K?

ok mal. Thanks for your input. And I'd say it's brought in a fair share of people. And Bif I have seen some videos shot on the 5d MkII and It just really looked amazing. And I really don't know about the HV30. It's my DoP's money, and he can really do what he wants with it. But I did tell him about the remote.

Funny, how I KNEW you'd say that.......many have done so in the past.

Use descriptive thread titles from now on, okay?

I've done it for this time, and used a randomly selected one.

I'm sure you can do better though.....next time.

Yeah, probably. Interestingly, AFAIK, Worldwind can be used for free, with Google you'd have to pay a license if you use it in a production.
(I might be wrong on that though....)

That's because everything a gov agency is producing is seen as public domain (besides the classified stuff, of course). Everything I produce and that gets sent to the USDA ends up in the Library of Congress for public access and use.

Google uses that public domain product, adds some value by putting a Google stamp onto the product and is allowed to sell a license.

It looks like the upper part of that remote is for TV (not camera) operation. There's a TV/video button and the up down (large blue) keys are marked 'channel.' Presumably, the menu button is for the TV also.

If you can't get your money back for the broken HV, then it might be worth a try. But you really ought to try to get your (or your friend's) money back first. Did you look into this option yet?

I don't think that remote will work. You'll have to program it with the original HV's remote. You can only program the functions into the replacement that your original supports.

Yes, it's mostly a matter of trust and reputation and one's ability to return goods within a reasonable time frame. Absolutely there are people offloading faulty goods, a minority but it does happen.

My friend has contacted the company, and he is shipping it out today. I am pretty sure they will give him his money back, or at least a portion of it.

I would have left that, but that's not what you wrote. You stopped after the SUCKS part,
and therefore no one can tell WHAT sucks. It's a lazy-arse way in trying to be cute and drive
unsuspecting forum members to one's thread. And I don't like it because it makes the forum VERY messy.

Thanks for the update - do I really have to compare NASA Worldwind and Google Earth, or will someone just tell me?

That NASA thing is for Windows only if you are too lazy to compile it yourself.
