    Default Cheap Mattebox

    From here.

Just wondering, as it's one of the most covet item in the filmmaking gear, and as most people had good comments on it, I'm thinking about building some for a ridiculous price.
Anyone would be interested? What would you expect to pay for one?
Keep in mind that this is totally 100% hand made.

Hey, It looks good. Are the rail mounts 15mm and 60mm apart? Also, is there any chance you'll be adding flags?
I'm not sure how much I'd pay though. I've never really looked into seeing how much a matte box cost, etc. Maybe take the cost of materials, then add however much for labor, and then add a percentage of that for your mark up, or what ever. Let us know though what you decide to charge.
    Thanks

    1) Not on the setup pictured. It's the smaller model from Cavision, so the rods are 8mm. But I could always do something for 15mm rods, even if it's enough light not to need to be supported by rods.
    2) Yeah, I'm thinking about a way to hold the french flag so it won't be ugly and too much a "DIY" look.

Cool, I'll start thinking about building some more seriously then.
I may add that I don't want to sell them the same price as the CineCity matte box, which are over priced imho for what they do. I'll have to check, but I'd be happy to offer them for 50$ shipped everywhere. I'll see how much it'll cost total (material, time spent & shipping charges)
I'll let you know in a further post guys.

For sure. I don't know when I'll have the time to work on this, probably later this week, as I'm working at the job and I'm also working on a DIY personal project.
I have a rough idea on how to make it, so it shouldn't take a much longer delay.
    I'll keep you updated guys.

As I said, I'd be happy, but I'll have to check how much it costs me before.

Well, for a mattebox that probably performs better than the cinecity models for ~twice the price, I'd say that it would be a good deal.

That'd be dope if you had two models. One with the flags, and one without. Cokin P filters are mad cheap so even if you bought the Cine, you'd still be spending alot in 4x4 filters.

Plus this matte would be really light so you wouldn't technically need a 15mm rod mount. I would prefer clip on, because I have a zoom on my DSLR, so the lens barrel moves as I zoom.

I'll work on it more seriously then.
I'll try to have a definitive price set later next week. And I'll try to make some, so they'll be ready just in case..

Do you prefer with the cokin P holder, because I can make it simpler than this by using a PVC pipe. With the right dimension it'll fit on a Raynox WA lens without problem.
It's just because with the sunshade stuck in fiberglass, it becomes a bit harder to put/remove from the holder. But with a PVC pipe it would be easier to just fit it on the lens.
I can always try to make something under the mattebox to be able to fit on a rod support system.

Here's the version without the cokin sunshade/holder:

BTW, it holds on the lens tight enough and it don't weight much, so there's no really need of a rod support.

more infos about the construction here.

Well I'd like a Cokin filtered one (with large threads) because I will be using this on my DSLR, but everyone else has a different case.

    Keep up the good work!

I've made 3 today. I'm waiting on the Cokin Holder & Sunshade to finish them with the fiberglass.
Haven't figured out a good way to fit the french flag yet, still working on it.

    Drape,

If you start making these, I'll definitely be picking one up in a couple weeks.

Definitely want to see one with the flags

I'd buy this if it was produced. Let me know when you're looking to start selling.

All right, I think I found something very hard to beat guys (and I already bought stuff from that specific seller and can vouch for him):

Mine arrived today and the build quality leaves a bit to be desired... we'll set it up with a Cokin P filter for a light alternative to the Chrosziel (as a run-n-gun dealy), but it isn't wowing me so far.

Could you put a link to the model you bought?
I'm working on another version of the one I've built. Should be easier to do, so it could be doable to produce some this time...we'll see, it's still "in progress" so I don't want to post pictures now. As soon as I'll get something finished that looks great, I'll post some pictures.
