Lol most awkward wall of death ever!

Nice stuff though Daniel. I dig the side view/up close cams.

Thanks mate. I decided to get my little crappy B cam up close this time, seeing as I had wide shot covered with a mates cam. HV footage is the best looking of all. The crappy B cam is the black and white footage (the original colouring of those clips was BAD).

Yup... I'm a little peeved with the framing on the wide shot, it's a little uncentered, but... I didn't set it up, I just paid for the footage

Good job with the two cams. I like the cutting between wide and closeup, looks better than having everything close (I think). The sound is OK, but the mix doesn't sound right. The vocal sounds too dry and the drums and instruments aren't cutting through. Looks like the drums and guitar amps are miced, maybe the engineer didn't feed you a balanced mix? Anyway, probably not much you can do about it.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Saw this a couple hours ago. Was this the audio feed from the mixer? Horrible sound. The keyboard is too loud, and even though the drums seem to be miced, I can't hear them. Oh yeah LOL at the kids doing jumping jacks.... what the heck is that about?!

Not sure about that. I know they f*cked up the sound... it was rushed when they set it up. Still sounds better than what most of the bands did that night I tell you!

I'd say the Zoom H1 did a pretty good job! I ended up recording this mix through the headphone jack (Which could be why everything sounds flat?).

I think the H1 did fine. The headphone out could get hot and you'd get a distorted recording. That's not the case, level is fine. All these desks are different. If the headphone out was monitoring the foldback, for example (which is common practice), that would explain why the mix was vocal heavy.

Without knowing more about the setup, it's impossible to know why the mix wasn't good. All I can suggest is that you befriend the engineer, get there early, drop the guy a bottle etc.

Anyway, keep at it, it's all good learning and this one turned out much better than before.

Well the thing about drums is, they're LOUD. So that's why they don't need to raise their volume so much cause they're already loud. That the problem I had when I recorded a live show. I wanted to get great sound in the house, but at the same time get a great recording. And it's hard to monitor the recording right there on the spot unless you're in an isolated booth or something, but that is very rare at venues.

I actually managed to do that. One of the bands hired an engineer to mix their set (which I recorded) he suggested the headphone out due to my previous run ins with this very same board, as the AUX out doesn't have volume control (Therefor the mix comes in very hot into the Zoom).

I probably won't be working another show for a month or two, so I may invest in a JuicedLink or some form of Preamp so that I can control that AUX out feed into the recorder. Could you recommend a cheap way to do this? (~$100?)

This should help attenuate the aux out to the H1.

Indeed, but even in a small venue it's desirable to mic up and mix well for both FOH delivery and recording.

This venue is a lot smaller than the one Daniel has been shooting at, but notice the crispness and punch a good mix provides.

It's a bit long, so skip to 2:30 for the drum solo.

Yeah from what I read it looks like their sound engineer didn't do a great job. Doesn't matter if they setup quickly, you can still tweak the sound after they started. He must have been a deaf sound engineer to not hear the drums or backup singer coming through.

It all depends. What sounds good for FOH, isn't necessarily a good recording mix. Or if, as I suspect, they gave Daniel a foldback feed, of course it won't sound right.

Yeah as with every other sound engineer, I too wouldn't give him MY headphone out. He probably did get a sub/ aux mix, that's why we don't hear the drums cause they probably don't need to be in the monitor mix. Yeah I think that's what happened

Thanks man. The vocals and horn section are a bit weak. But the rest of the guys are really good. If you look closely, you'll see LOGOS running around with his HV30 on a spiderbrace, just after the keyboard shot.

    LOGOS is doing fine, Duck.
We've stayed in touch, but I really miss him. Lately he did a job, documenting these guys who gather bat's dung, to make a medicine as a cure for dengue fever. He sent me a picture of him wearing a hat he'd made of the stuff.
