Amazing camera. AVCHD, yuck. That's the only reason I will not buy it. I've already expressed my thoughts on why I dislike AVCHD format. Can you believe this? I know a guy who has a Mac Pro ... Xenon Processors...8 gigs RAM.... and AVCHD won't even playback on his system. That computer is a MONSTER. Just goes to show how much AVCHD sucks. You know, I think these hard drive cameras are cool because you don't have to waste time digitizing. But I still prefer tape. That's just my opinion.

    Don't feel alone, you're not.
I still prefer tape for several reasons that has been already discusses so many times in so many threads...
The AVCHD vs MPEG2 is like FORD vs CHEVY...all-in-all, they'll do ~same job, but some prefers certain models/brands.
I would personally prefer to have a 3CCD High-Definition HDV camcorder instead of my HV40, or even this new model, because of the CMOS sensor that causes the Jello-Effect, but people could look at me like a green martian or something : Tape is dead, AVCHD performs better than MPEG2...over and over...
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

Huh, AVCHD plays back just fine on my 2.6 Athlon X2 w/ 2gb ram. Gotta love GPU decoding.

As for the camera, I'd rather spend a little more for the XF100 and get 4:2:2 MPEG-2.

I have a friend who knows a guy who accidentally swallowed a butter knife and died. Butter knives suck.

No, it simply says: because bigger sensor gives shallower DOF.

Just woke up from a dream in which I had an XA10 in my bedroom, and loads of people kept making me cash offers to buy it, but I rejected them all, even the £2,500 one because I liked the camera very much :P - Just thought I'd let you all know hahaha :P

Based on the pics I think it does not. I may be wrong though.

No; they're responding to a common complaint about cameras with four-bladed irises (like the HV series) — with the aperture set to anything other than WFO, the rhombus- or diamond-shaped iris turns out-of-focus highlights diamond-shaped and the bokeh becomes kind of "clumpy looking."

You and I both. I will say that I like the looks of the menu system better than my HF11's.

Agreed. I want a bigger sensor, and interchangeable lenses. Ag af-100 is looking like the ticket, until (if ever) Scarlet releases.

I agree ... I had the HFS21 for a while at the same time with my HV40. The AVCHD footage had more macroblocking artifacts then the HDV from my HV40. Nothing too crazy, but it let the HV40 footage look more organic to me. I eventually returned the HFS21 and kept the HV40.

The 3CCD Canon pro line is a fantastic line of cameras... really top notch in image Quality, control, etc., and a definitive step up.

I've even equipped my Canon XLH1S with an Nanoflash for ultra high bitrate recording. You should see footage from it at 220-280mb MPEG 4:2:2 I-Frame. Its really incredible and looks uncompressed and also allows so much extra leeway in post to push colors and regain more dynamic range from highlights, etc.

If there is some way I can post a short clip for you guys to see, I will.

Unfortunately, by the time it's compressed and resized to web video, the difference will probably be hard to spot!

I saw the Convergent Design guys demoing the nanoFlash recording from an XH-A1 at NAB two years ago, so I can confirm that higher bitrate I-frame clips recorded on that little gizmo look absolutely stunning, visually indistinguishable from a live feed on a 60-inch HD monitor.

That's why I wonder why so many folks are that obsessed with stream quality when most of the stuff ends up on YT or Vimeo in any way.

    Must've been the XH G1 as the A1 doesn't have HD-SDI out.

But yes, the footage really is stunning.

Well for me, as I work in broadcast and film production, the high-bitrate means so much more quality to begin with, whether it be post effects or just maintaining maximum PQ in general. THis allows for the highest quality possible once it has gone through the broadcast transmission process.

But yes, for most everyday uses, formats like HDV and AVDHD are totally fine.

I agree. There are few reasons NOT to have removable lenses.I'd even pay a $1,000 extra just for the flexibility. Then again, a company says something very specific when they do not offer removable lenses. That something is OBSOLESCENCE, as in Planned Obsolescence. That means buy it, earn at least 10 times its cost with it and then replace it.

Just watched this new XA10 video:

Seems to be a great little cam, though I believe it is too pricey for what it is.
