    Default Canon XA10

Is this the replacement that we've been looking for?
    Product Highlights
    - 1/3" CMOS Sensor
    - Native 1920 x 1080
    - 24Mbps AVCHD Recording
    - 60i, PF30, PF24, Native 24p
    - 64GB Internal Flash Drive
    - 10x HD Zoom Lens
    - Dual SD Memory Card Slots
    - 3.5" Touch Panel LCD Screen
    - Dual XLR Inputs w/Detachable Handle
    - Waveform Monitor, Peaking, Zebra 70/100%

The dual XLR inputs sounds appealing, the small size is cool, native 24p. I still don't like AVCHD, but it sounds pretty good. And guess what: it comes with a manual focus wheel!

I sure as hell haven't been "waiting" for another 1/3 chip camera...

Agreed. I want a bigger sensor, and interchangeable lenses. Ag af-100 is looking like the ticket, until (if ever) Scarlet releases.

    Price is ok, but AVCHD?

Looks pretty good, seems like a XH-A1 style with card storage. I'd prefer to have removable lenses on my next video camera though.

I agree. There are few reasons NOT to have removable lenses.I'd even pay a $1,000 extra just for the flexibility. Then again, a company says something very specific when they do not offer removable lenses. That something is OBSOLESCENCE, as in Planned Obsolescence. That means buy it, earn at least 10 times its cost with it and then replace it.

It is too late. I believe many were asking for something close to this when the HV series were at their highest popularity. For the price, I think the Panasonic HMC40 seems to be a better buy. We would have to wait for footage though. Still, its got some nice features. It would look "cooler" with a proper lens hood and not the one it currently has, though that's just nitpicking on my part. I also see a focus/zoom ring. Long overdue for a Canon HD camcorder a this price range.

I would think with the current competing dslr's they would bump down the price for something like this
    The Somnium - Winner of Antman's Film Contests #9 & Indy Mogul 5mmh #9
Snoballs Winner of Indy Mogul 5mmh #27

I do agree, price seems a to high. However I would pay 2K$ if they would give it removable lenses. Or when lenses could be replaced with a collar-mount accepting 35mm (still photography) lenses. Then it would be top-ever-seller!

For MY job, the two card slots would be an argument already for the Canon.

I think most ppl here come at video from a film stand point, but this could be great for a doc/ eng set up.

I know, that and the fact that it has 64GB built in flash memory is a huge advantage over the Panasonic. I meant that the Panasonic is a better buy in terms of overall features. I mean, the HMC40 not only records Full HD but also different 720p flavors and 60p. Not only that but it has 3 chips instead of one and physical buttons for most of the important stuff. It costs way less than the MSRP of the XA10 (Around $1660 in Amazon last time I checked).

The Canon does not have most of these features, and most if not all the settings are in the menus. However, I will reserve full judgment until I have seen footage from it. If the HV series was any indication, the PQ of this could be amazing, and in the end that matters more to some people than other features.

Can't find a price on this yet which makes me nervous.
Saw the Vixia HF G10 is about $1500? Thought this would be more of a replacement for the HV40 and the XA10 more of an upgrade.

The price is listed at $2K street, but I doubt it'll be that much when it hits all the shops. Early adopters will eat the premium price tag, but I'm waiting until I have the money (at which time the price will definitely drop). The price will drop once enough people jump on it and start filling the Internet-waves with its praises and the user-praise kicks in.

The manual control, to me, is a life saver and worth the money. I'm honestly sick and tired of the hacks to make my HV20s work the way it should: the cell phone trick and Irv's manual focus ring, in particular. Much more headache than they're worth. And the piddly mic input, motor noise and all of that stuff.

now that we are in April, and there's tons of footage from the Canon XA10 out there on Youtube and Vimeo, the question is....

have any of your minds changed ?

I love my HV20, but it's time to upgrade. This camera does indeed look awesome, I've been scouring the net for reviews, and from what I've seen and read this camera is going to be a BIG hit. People love the video it shoots, the fully manual operations you can do with it, and the lens and the focus ring.

Most of you posted your thoughts months ago, what are your opinions today ? ... I'm aware though, if you are not really in the market for a new camcorder, that you may not be up to speed on all the reviews, videos available at this time ( April, 2011 ) so I'll keep that in mind.

I've been on the fence with this thing, but here is my line of thought:

$1,999 for a fancy AVCHD camera = waste of time

    but...

    $1,999 + $1,000 for Ninja = lossless capture/full manual control/xlr inputs etc...

This makes it seem much more worthwhile. Let's face it, they will never give you lossless capture in a cheap camera. So for about $3,000 you are getting something that is a definite step up from an HV, and theoretically better than the more expensive model with the 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec. Won't exactly be run-and-gun with a recording box mounted on it...but does that matter?

My only question is: have they crippled the HDMI output like they have on the DSLRs? Are you getting full raster uncompressed 4:2:2?

If it is indeed a step-up from the HV, I may even trade my HV in for one of these.
