footage dark in canvas WHEN PLAYED

hey all for some reason whenever i go to play anything in the timeline, it appears much darker than what it is when paused. i can make adjustments to gamma, WB etc, which again ONLY appear when paused.

i'm editing with FCP 7 running snow leopard on i7 quad core.

code is pro res 422

some clips are mpeg 2 linear PCM

this is annoying as hell, and i really just want to get it dealt with. i'm not sure what preferences i should be looking at in FCP to attempt to fix this. i'm fairly new.

Are your RT settings correct? Little menu top left in the timeline.

wow, so much struggle for something so little. yes, i clicked on "use playback settings" instead of "full quality"

i do not understand what this means but it fixed it quite simply. thank you.
