Thumbs up Rebel without a Deal [book]

This is a book by a filmmaker I know, Vince Rocca, and his well earned info on making a feature film. There are several great pitfalls indie filmmakers can fall into that we can learn from in this book. It doesn't hurt to have several interviews with THE Kevin Smith in it too..

I give this the highest recommendation I can.

Looks good, always nice to learn from others who have been in a similar situation. Yes, you cannot beat a little Kevin Smith in there as well. The guy is about as "real" as you can get, and Hollywood grits their teeth everytime they see a new hit movie from him.

Vince is a good guy too. He tells the story about how he met Kevin Smith and how they became friends in the book.

    Hey that's my book SWEEEEET.

If anybody has any questions?? I'm happy to answer.

My book was obviously inspired by Robert Rodriguez's book. Like his, my book chronicles the making of my first movie Kisses and Caroms.

Rebel without a Deal takes you on my journey from the concept (including Dov's 2 day film school) all the way through completion (including final distribution with Warner Bros.) where it went on the gross over $1 million dollars.

The book contains detailed accounts of my interactions with every major distributor and the results of my submissions to every major film festival.

Most importantly and probably of most interest to inspiring filmmakers the book contains profit and loss statements, most notably the actual statements I received from the distributor. You get to not only experience how I made the movie in 5 days for $11,000, how I got it through post, how I met Kevin Smith, how I got to National Lampoon and Warner Bros, but ultimately how much I made on the movie.

These financials I expect will provide endless incite and help for anyone trying to budget a movie and discover its ROI potential.

As stated, Rebel without a Deal also contains detailed conversations with New York Times bestselling author and award-winning screenwriter/director Kevin Smith as he lends his take on my journey and shares his own experiences with his first movie, Clerks.

The book is available at Createspace & Amazon, on Kindle, Nook and in mid January it should be up on iBooks.

Rebel without a Deal's main website also contains the first 33 pages available to read for free.

If anyone has questions or comments I'll answer.

Just read the first 30 pages. I'll definitely be ordering my copy. Really insightful stuff! The stuff with Kevin Smith is really great, and I love the Robert Rodriguez influence (I've read his book 2 or 3 times now.)

Is it going to be available as a printed book as well or only one of those newfangled ebooks?

Well my paperback copy arrived and I have to say I'm loving the book, great job Vince! Perhaps a little too much information on the crotch problems during the shoot though

Thanks, don't forget to review it at Amazon. It helps.

Actually, I've spoken to other filmmakers who have had the problem. During production stress, showering and hygiene don't seem to fit in anywhere. I kept it in so other filmmakers would not freak out when it happened to them.

My first review is up. Film and Digital Times gave Rebel without a Deal the once over. They even included their opinion on Kisses and Caroms.

    Way to go, Vince!

I remember when you were showing us a few scenes from the film back at Indieclub in LA - was it 2005?

I don't know how I stumbled across this thread but your book trailer made me want to read the book. I bought it on Amazon and it is one of only a handful of books I haven't been able to put down! I've stayed up late, blown off work to follow your adventures in an exceedingly well written book!! I'm glad you kept a dairy and wrote it in a chronological manager as it has made me feel like I am on the roller coaster with you. I keep wanting to peek at the end since I am only at page 226.

I highly recommend this book if you have any desire to make a "feature" and do it before you buy a single piece of gear! More than any other book I have read, including Rebel Without a Crew, I feel you provide the most insight overall! I'll make sure to post a review on Amazon.

Well I finished the book last night and want to share my final thoughts.
1st, I am glad I bought the book. I have over 75 books covering all aspects of the industry and Vince's take is unique.
2nd. the book is printed on demand (mine was March 21, 2011) with a copyright date of November, 2010; however the book ends on about April 6, 2008.
3rd. The book ends in what I feel is an abrupt fashion and made me wonder what happened from April, 2008 to November, 2010.
4th. Fortunately, you can find out some of what happened during that period by going to the books website and Vince's Youtube site.
5th. To me, there are still a lot of unanswered questions which I think could have been answered and included in the book, but it is not a reason to not buy the book.

Maybe Vince wrote it the way he did to set the stage for a sequel.

Showmanship... leave em' wanting more... if you want to make it in this business kid, never paint the door closed. (Sequel available on demand )

There are many companies like Polychrome still screwing filmmakers today. While I did have some resolution, most filmmakers will not. They will find themselves stuck in a cycle of hunting down the money. I felt my story wasn't about Polychrome, it was about a newbie making a flick and getting it out there. Kevin summed it up well with "A hundred and six astronauts in the whole lalalalalalala world and I'm one of 'em!" That's cool.

Had I continued, I'd still be writing today, because movies are organic and never ending. So where would I end it? When I get my rights back? When I sue PolyChrome? When they file Bankruptcy? When I attach as a creditor? When I get money from the trustee? When I resell or relicense Kisses and Caroms?

For me it ends where I made a movie, I got distribution, I saw money from that distribution and I've moved on. Weather I build a career still remains to be seen.

Fire away. I'd be happy to answer them, and maybe I'll include them in a second edition.

No sequel, but enough people have expressed this issue so I probably will add a wrap up chapter to a second edition.

This thread rises from the DEAD!

Hey, my second book, "11 Simple Steps to turn a Screenplay into a Marketable Movie: or, How I got a $10k movie to gross $1 Million through Warner Bros" is available for FREE to Kindle users this Thanksgiving weekend.

I make no money, I'm just hoping to get it out there, and get some reviews.

    Happy Holiday! and Happy Reading!
