I assume that you set a start and end point to focus and it will pull it for you.
    OhMiGod

If it had that It'd be amazing. Only downside would be if it it just went from point A to point B whenever you tell it to start. What if you like have to focus on one spot for 4 seconds then rack to a closer object for...10 seconds then Back to the first object. I don't think It could do something that comprehensive. But it's still be nice for simple shots.

Agreed, they need a full video tutorial for magic lantern.

also what does "pre-alpha" hack mean
Software has different stages of development and testing before it is released. Alpha is usually the first version, and Beta usually a not-final version that is released to the public. Pre-Alpha, I assume, means that he is only in the very beginning stages of the hack. So while yes, you can use it, it will be prone to bugs, and you can't exactly call customer support if something goes wrong.

IMO, 1 excludes 2 and vice versa.

Does anyone else have the problem when they turn off their camera when using magic lantern they can't turn it back on. You have to take the battery out and put it back in. I really want to use ML but can't until I fix this problem.

There is now an official 1.0.9 firmware ML release, and it's awesome!

There is also a pre-release with the ability to access the intermediate ISOs!!!!!

160,320,640,1250 are all now available. Amazing!

Can safely say that I have know experience with any hacks or magic lantern and just followed the instructions that comes with the download and with a MAC have ML up and running on the newest firmware from Canon....pretty sweet so far. 16gb transcend class 6 card...loving the zebras as well as no AGC...still trying to figure out the rack focus stuff....No issues after running it for a few hours....will go out and shoot some stuff tomorrow learn the settings and have the intermediate ISOs which is amazing...just waiting on dialing in white balance via TEMP and it will be complete....hope for no issues of course

I'm wondering why not everybody has done this hack it truly opens the camera up to a entire new level...Maybe I am speaking too soon and it will beat me in the end, but loving it right now and never had any warrenty or canon service plan so we'lll see

Would you mind sharing your workflow for Mac ? I've tried, but I can't get the SD card to boot.
Did you use terminal or 3rd party software for the SD card ?
    Thanks in advance !

Here are my steps....i just followed the INSTALL .pdf that came in the unzipped file....
    1. Put regular SD card in camera and formatted it
    2. Took out SD card from camera and downloaded the latest "magiclantern-0.2.0.rc1.550d.fw109" and unzipped it
    3. On my MAC copied only the .fir file onto the SD card and put the SD card back into my camera and went through the update firmware process...waited until the light went off and turned the camera off and took battery out
    4. Put battery and SD card back in and formatted the SD card in camera again
    5. Took SD card out and put back in card reader in MAC...moved the autoexec.bin, all .bmp files, and magic.cfg to the SD card. Next opened the make_bootable.sh file and changed the line near the top to dev=/dev/disk1s1 ((((this may vary but on my MBP it was disk1s1)))).
    6. Then copied everything in the make_bootable.sh file and pasted it in terminal and hit enter....this should unmount the SD card...I then took the SD card out of the computer and put it back in to make sure that it would mount again
    7. Once I did this I then put the SD card in the camera and turned on the camera and voila it was there working with all the menus when you hit the garbage button

No 3rd party software...Literally took 5 minutes...obviously do at your own risk....i hold no responsibility if you brick your camera...

    Thanks a lot Dave !

Apparently they simplified the procedure for this 1.0.9 update, I tried the 1.0.8 version which involved a few more steps to make it bootable.

Any idea if you can switch out SD cards ? I.e. boot up with the modified SD card, open the SD compartment, put in another SD card and shoot ... or do you need to use the modified SD card to shoot with too ?
Just wondering cos longer shoots usually see me using 3 or more SD cards, that would mean I'd have to do this with every SD card I use.

Will try later tonight, thanks again !

    +1 for this question

I am pretty sure that you need to have the modified SD card in at all times to run ML....it works off that card...if you put in an unmodified SD card then it will not run...I have not tested this but do not want to try...best bet would be to make another card bootable with the files on it...

    Default Qscales

ML Qscale tests these are the data rates that I got after going through he Qscales.... unfortunately the camera would stop recording after only a few seconds at -14 thru -16....I would say its really only safe to record as high as -13 as of now...still testing stuff

    -1: 8.8 Mb/s
    -2: 9.6 Mb/s
    -3: 11.8 Mb/s
    -4: 13.9 Mb/s
    -5: 15.0 Mb/s
    -6: 17.1 Mb/s
    -7: 21.0 Mb/s
    -8: 24.3 Mb/s
    -9: 29.6 Mb/s
    -10: 35.3 Mb/s
    -11: 42.0 Mb/s
    -12: 48.0 Mb/s
    -13: 56.3 Mb/s
-14: 64.2 Mb/s (flashes overheating icon and stops recording after 2 seconds)
-15: 67.5 Mb/s (flashes overheating icon and stops recording after 2 seconds)
-16: 86.7 Mb/s (flashes overheating icon and stops recording after 2 seconds)

Have you tried the higher bitrates with a Class 6 card or a Class 10 card ?

These are all on a class 6 transcend 16gb card...probably work better on a class 10 card...and it depends on the ISO setting as well

From what I've read, there are two things needed:

    1. A firmware change to the camera, to enable booting from a SD card.
    2. A bootable card with the software on it. (A bootable card without software will lock & possibly damage the camera.)

So, if you want to switch cards, they should all be prepared as in 2. above.

All this sounds nice, but I'll have to wait until Magic Lantern provides a hack to make the built-in LCD screen into a flip-screen before I jump for a T2i!

I was shooting part of my entry for Antman's Film Contest contest, and one entire shot was ruined due to not being able to see how I was positioned... Does anyone want to only see half to a quarter of my head???

Oh well, a re-shoot is on order, and I'll keep saving for a 60D...

You could hook a laptop up and use as monitor for shooting your self shots.

Once again thanks tremendeously, took me 5 minutes to install it and have it running !
Only thing I remarked is that I can't hear the audio output anymore, even though volume is all the way open on playback. I guess because they use the USB AV port instead.

Oh and for those people worrying about installing this hack, once you pop in another (unprepped) SD card the camera behaves as normal.

Updated with the latest version : intermediate ISO's !!! (just like the 7D, with 160 ISO multiples giving way less noise) and audio playback is back on the camera speaker.

Great work, this camera actually surpasses the 7D specwise now.

Does anyone else need to take out the battery to be able to turn it back on after it goes into sleep mode or turning off the switch?

Wow intermediate ISOs! That is amazing.

What is the work flow for formatting your card after you install ML on it. Lets say you are shooting a doc and are swapping between 3 cards, if you format one would ML still be there ?

Thats the only hitch I could see, since I format my cards all the time.

You'll have to change your workflow, since formatting the SD card will erase ML from it. I import all my footage through the EOS utility and plan on erasing all my footage there instead of formatting my card everytime.

In a worst case scenario (cards no longer functioning properly due to not formatting regularly) I guess you'll have to format the card and reinstall ML again afterwards.
