Default Is it safe to take T2i in low tempretures?

So it's gonna be about 41F [degrees Fahrenheit] tomorrow, taking the T2i for a 2-3 hour shoot, is this safe? What is the safest procedure to insure safety for my camera.

I read in the manual somewhere that condensation can occur if the T2i is in cold conditions. They said to put it in a plastic bag or something before you take it to a different level of temperature. Thanks. Feel free to redirect me to another post if this has already been discussed.

No problems. Canon specifies 32-104F - don't you have the temperature specs on page 230 in your manual?

The battery will not provide as much juice when it's cold. The problem with condensation is only once you get in from the cold.

Yes, actually Janke you should be proud , ever since I've been seeing your "read the manual" posts, I've actually started reading my manuals for everything, even my spare batteries.
I realize the importance in reading instructions and how much they help. T2i's manual was pretty long, skipped some stuff, must have missed the temperature, but I did read the plastic bag tip.

Next week I will try that too...
Winter time in Michigan, great time to get some outdoor shots, it makes the place more lively.

It should be ok. However, you may experience condensation buildup when going from the cold to warm indoors. I'm not sure how much, if any, environment sealing the T2i (or your lenses) have. So this may be a concern. Best way to avoid this is to put the camera and lens in an airtight plastic bag before heading indoors.

The cold can also affect the battery and how long it will hold it's charge. So make sure it's fully charged.

If you're truly worried about the cold affecting it, get one of THESE and a box of heat warmer packets.

The T2i has no weather sealing, so you are right to worry about the condensation. I tend to keep mine sealed in a camera bag and give it 30mins or more to aclimatise to the cold before using it outside. I also tend to leave it for several hours on returning indoors!

If you are using canon plastic lenses it will take less time for them to aclimatise than the older metal lenses like pentax m42 or such. In general, these cameras are pretty fragile, so I don't think you can be too paranoid when dealing with hot/cold environment changes!!

If you do a lot of cold weather shooting, then an upgrade to the 5D or 7D might actually be worth it! http://canonfieldreviews.com/7d-1-weather-sealing/

This article and the photographs accompanying it motivated me to make myself afford a couple of L series lenses for my 7D. On a "weather sealed" body like the 7D and others mentioned in the article threading a proper fitting filter (I use Hoya HMC UV) on the end of the lens completes the "weather sealing".

I don't know if I'd want to count on it in a heavy downpour but I no longer worry about using the camera in light rain or colder weather.

Just so you know, one of the first shoots I made with my 550D was of a model rocket launch, out in the snow, on a freezing day last March... surprise, surprise, the camera still works!

Exposure compensation +2/3 stop beacause of snow & clouds.

Or a 60D. The 60D has environmental sealing too. But I don't believe it's to the extent of the 7D or 5D. It's somewhere between the T2i and 7D.

Well, I'll be in London next week and hopefully will have some free time to shoot a bit of landscape (timelapse probably). I believe it's cold in London in this period. Here in Athens today we had 25 degrees C

Well, I did the shoot today. Put the camera in a plastic bag out into 45F degree temperature, shot in 2 locations, put it back in the plastic back and back home. No problems. Thanks for the input guys.

Be sure to share your footage if you can. I miss what Michigan looks like in the winter.

No snow yet . I'll have footage posted soon. Thanks to this brand new $20 SD card reader that has just overheated and is no longer usable, it will take longer then expected.

I didn't think there would be unless you were somewhere up near Houghton / Higgins or the U.P.

THIS is the SD reader I have. Picked it up at Walmart for $6 a few months back. There's also THIS one. Same model number, just a different name on it.

BTW, I was hired to do a shoot at an Ice Hockey Rink this winter. The camcorder (HV30) would be in cold conditions for 1hr 30mins. Is that safe?

Lawrence: If your computer is of fairly recent manufacture and has a built in reader chances are it will recognize and read SDHC cards. I was buying those little SanDisk readers that plugged into a USB port until I realized my 2 1/2 year old Desktop, 2 year old laptop, both would read SDHC cards plugged into the slots available on the computer.

    Clifford,
Pretty much the same thing applies to a camcorder. But since yours uses tape and has moving parts, not sure how it may affect it. There's probably greased gears in the tape mechanism, and then the tape itself. If the tape uses a "wet" lubricant, this may be affected. Same for any grease in the gearing mechanism. These things can thicken up in the cold, depending on the substance. I'm interested in what others may have to say about this.

Now if I still lived in northern Iowa where it gets down to -40 (or colder) in the winter, I'd have to consider placing an order.
