Default Will Canon compete with Sony's NEX-VG10?

I have a simple question. Does anybody have any rumors/inside information concerning Canon's mysterious absence in the HDSLR hybrid video market?

The Sony NEX-VG10 is currently unchallenged in this category.

I would love to own the NEX-VG10, but if Canon comes out with something similar, I don't want to rush and buy the Sony.

Is Canon coming out with a competitor to the NEX-VG10 anytime soon?

Hard to say, as Canon keeps pretty quiet about most of their plans. It is rumoured though that they are working on something of the sort--but it's just a rumour as far as I've heard...

I don't expect Canon to bring out a camera like the VG10 or AF100 soon. My best guess would be next fall at the soonest. With the $4000 XF105 and $6500 XF300, they could slot it in between these two. But it would eat into the XF300 sales. Placing it at the VG10 price point of $2k, t2i's and 7d's would outsell it. The t2i and 7d are Canon's cash cows for interchangeable lens video camera's. Why bring out something new that would hurt sales?

Correct! Canon has it all planned in what they are doing, but it sure would be nice to see some improvements in the DSLRs for video.

"The t2i and 7d are Canon's cash cows for interchangeable lens video camera's. Why bring out something new that would hurt sales?"

There's only 1 reason, but it is THE most important reason:

    Dedicated for video OLPF.

If Canon follows Sony and puts an existing DSLR APS-C sensor in a camcorder form-factor with proper OLPF, full manual control and XLR audio all for less than $3k then they will have a VG10-killer and possibly an AF100 killer.
Such a camera would not significantly impact t2i and 7d sales as the still image quality would be sub-par compared to dedicated still cameras.
In fact, Canon might end up selling a good portion of still AND video cameras using the exact same sensor & chipset to the SAME customers by virtue of the fact that they can obtain stills and video with the same Canon "look" which presumably drove them to buy Canon in the first place.

I'd be satisfied if Canon simply released something like the HV20 but with APS-C and a short FFD mount which can be adapted for virtually any lens.... $2k, SOLD!!!!!!

We just have to convince them to change the sensor size in the XF100/105 and put on a lens mount instead of a fixed lens...

Why not taking a real video camera, like XL H1, take out the tape mechanism, give it a big sensor and mount the EOS adaptor in from of it? They have all the parts already...

True, but we're also wanting the $1,000-$2,000 range...

The big sensor, and EOS mount is a specific camcorder would be made for a very low margin of its clients. Thats why the 5d is so good. Photography and Video in a compact little box.

Clifford, there are a lot people don't fall for the VDSLR hype or would buy Frankencams like that Sony soccer mom thing or the new Panasonic. The XL is the perfect body for a "prosumer" cam - pseudo shoulder mount and the handgrip at the right position - at the lens, not the body. Why do you think Sony copied the body concept for the EX-3?

Sorry, Tim, but my tastes are simple: I simply prefer the best.

Why not use the standard EF mount? About the only lens that can't be easily adapted are 4/3 and FD mount. Even an FD mount can be modified into an EF mount, although it costs about $400. There's no need to use any other lenses, as L lenses are some of the best you can get. By using any other mount, Canon would further hurt their own sales. They want you to buy their glass, not somebody else's glass.

There are many, many shooters in possession of hoardes of SLR glass.
I own about $5k of Nikon glass.
If Canon limits their camera with a medium or long flange focal distance mount, i.e. a Canon mount, then they will lose me and MANY other potential buyers, no matter how low their price. I will not be coerced into buying Canon's 50mm f1.4 lens when I already own a Nikon.
Canon will lose me and I will settle for the flawed VG10 or maybe the AF100 or Sony's NEXCAM equivalent.
    Are you listening, Canon?
DO NOT cripple your camera with a Canon-only mount!!!!

Just thinking...that would make a pretty awesome and industry preferred camcorder. My tips to canon: Don't do any interlaced crap like you have been doing with your higher end prosumer camcorders, and consumers.

Canon is rumored to be coming out with something in July, but no real news yet.

Just like the Sony PMW-F3 is mostly an EX1 with a S35 sensor, Canon is rumored to be doing something with the XF300 and an APS-C sized sensor.

Who knows if there's any truth to the rumor, but it sounds plausible. Probably a little cheaper than an Sony F3, but not much.

Well, My parents "toy car" will run a lot longer then a GM.
My dad had a toyota truck since 1973, and took great care of it. Paint was still in pristine condition, and engine still had life in it. Only reason we got a new truck was we needed more space!

If anything is taken care of, it will last for a longgg time! I have nothing against the older Toyotas, it's the newer ones... The Camry is supposed to be a great car for long life, but give me my GM any day!

Now I'm trying to figure out how I got us started on vehicles in a "Will Canon compete with Sony's NEX-VG10" thread...
