Thread: Shot with Hv30 and 5d Mark II "Sarah Doesn't Sleep Around".

Default Shot with Hv30 and 5d Mark II "Sarah Doesn't Sleep Around".

This is rated R for language, violence, and adult sexual situations, if that matters, but no nudity. (Anyway I'm pretty sure I'd get an R rating if I sent it to the MPAA).
Yes, there are lots of technical issue. Sound isn't what I wish it was. I used mostly the HV with rode, but in a couple of spots raw 5d sound, and had some mic problems so in a couple of spots raw hv sound which is awful. The color is off, but I'm just really not that good at color balancing. We did white balance the 5d and the Hv, but then I think I lost white balance on the HV doing the cell phone trick and forgot to wb again, would have had to do it like a million times, so... The green screens aren't that clean. I just can't get away from spill. I think it's my lighting. YOu proabably need to light the hell out of the actors to kill the green spill, then stop down. I still haven't perfected that yet. When yuo set up in a small room, it seems the green screen just reflects green EVERYWHERE.

Love the green screen fake background(s). And the wide angle distortion thing u tried. Go more fake. Manipulate the material. Join the cult of expressionism.

I was somewhat inspired by natural born killers. Well, that and I didn't want to location shoot so I could shoot everything in one day. I was going to shoot some real backgrounds for the bar, and then said screw it. I'll play some music, and people will get they are at a bar. I was gonna use big mugs of coffee or something for the coffee shop scene, but then decided to go with some more realistic backgrounds, but in retrospect should have stuck with all fake.

The wide angle distortion is an accident. It was b roll footage, and I needed it for a cut away I didnt' have.

It didn't all need to be -equally- fake, (as I'm calling it).

The essense of expressionism is manipulating the material (exaggeration), and also using varied techniques- whatever gets your point across- and just basically not being afraid to let the audience be reminded that they are watching a movie.

Natural Born Killers is a textbook of expressionistic techniques.

    Also Run Lola Run.

Get this you can be a film theory dork like me:

Thank you. That's very interesting to me, because I worried that I hadn't created the right atmosphere since everything was rather brightly lit, with no dark shadows or moody lighting for the bedroom scene.

A friend I make films with with disagrees with me about adding behind the scenes footage (he hates it), like the little clip I added at the end here. He doesn't want to pull back the curtain and let the audience see the old man pretending to be Oz. But I think some people really like that stuff, and I like giving it to them. The movie is over, and what the hell, it's not like they dont' know it's not real.

But it was very liberating to just not worry about making it look "real" and getting locations. The actor playing Sarah was attracted to the project because I said it would be about the acting, not so much the sets, technicals, etc. (although it's always about the technicals for me, just can't help it).

The only thing about green screen though, is you cannot move the camera so it's kind of limited that way. You're stuck with locked off camera and cuts, unless you want the actors to float around the screen, OR you can move the actors around which isn't practical on a no budget set.

Too bad about the sound. I thought it was very good otherwise.

A little bit of reverb on the music at the opening would give a more convincing club sound.

Thank you, and nice suggestion about the reverb, I wish I'd thought of that. Perhaps I should have mixed in some actual clubs sounds as well.
I'm quite disappointed with the sound, and do want to do much better the next time around. I"m going to try an H1 I think. Not much in the budget for anything else. Now if I can only find a cute girl to slate for me. nah, it'll probably be me running in front of the camera, then back behind the camera.

Yeah why not? There's tons of ambient tracks up for grabs on sites like freesounds.org. When you mix an ambient it needs to be sublime; if your audience notices it, then it's probably too much. So a light touch is a must. If that makes sense?

Seems like the H1 would be a good investment:
