Thread: Timeline issues

    Default Timeline issues

I'm new to final cut. I normally use Vegas, and trying to learn Final cut. I'm editing footage from a canon HV40. I somehow forgot to set my audio/video default settings to HDV 1080 24p, and it was apparently on some SD NTSC 48 setting, so my footage is showing 720 x 480 and 29.97 if I look at the settings of the sequence as well as he default video settings. I'm not sure how I let this go unnoticed for an entire scene.

Anyway, I tried to create a new project once I corrected my settings and copy/paste the time line into a new sequence to see if I could do that without reediting, but the footage in the canvas shows up wrong and if I open up "settings" on the sequence in the browser, it still has the 720 x 480 settings listed at 29.97 even though my footage is 1080p 24p HDV. Is there any way to do this without reediting?

Did you import with the wrong setting as well? If so, that would cause your video to be the wrong size. If your imported footage is the correct size and framerate, go to Easy Setup, choose the right preset, and then create a new sequence.

What version of Final Cut are you using?

I think I already tried that, but I'll try it again.

You should be able to drag a clip into a new timeline and a dialog will ask you if you want to make the timeline settings match the clip you've just dragged in there.

hmmm.. so maybe this has something to do with it...

I created a scratch sequence, and used that sequence to sync the audio and video together. I then dragged that to a bin. If I right click on a clip in the bin that I synced.. it says its merged, and says its 29.97 and 720 x 480, while it shows that the clips that make up this merged clip are all 1440 x 1080 HDV at 23.98.

it was all imported at 1080p 24 HDV.
Has the pulldown been removed? Or was it shot in native 24P with an HV40?

    native 24p.

I figured it out. When I was syncing the audio, the sequence I created as a "scratch pad" to sync with was set to that 720 x 480 deal.. and so, once I synced them, it created subsequent 720 x 480 clips... now my question is there a way for me to go back and "replace" these new corrected clips with the wrong ones on the time line without having to competely recut it?

That had something to do with it.

Basically, you'll need to start over with the right sequence preset. Also, HnR's question is a good one.

Try opening a new sequence, drag a clip in and let FCP match the sequence settings, then copy and paste the old sequence content in there. You should dump all the old render files to save disc space.

Ok, I did wind up reediting it but it didn't take as long as I thought it would.. and all is well in the world of EXIT 101. Now I finally have my workflow down.
