Default Are we out of touch?

What camera takes the nicest pictures?
How can I get my audio sounding better?

Post production tips please? Color and editing skills sought.

    WHY?

    Who cares?

This is what people want to watch. Videos like this get millions of hits on YouTube and the makers can score $300,000 a year.

I can't watch more than a minute of crap like this, but this sh!t sells. This one has more than 1.5 million views.

Why would I care what people want to watch?
I do the things I do because I enjoy them and sometimes they're even educational, for me.

Yea... if it doesn't have sex, or a celebrity face on it... you're video ain't gonna be watched by many.

But still... how is it that some pimply faced nobody makes unboxing videos of their latest game console/camera/computer and gets 50,000 views... but the film-makers barely get 1000?
I know about 95% of my videos on Youtube that have been on for 2-3 years have less than 400 views. It's disheartening...

You need a new approach, D. Get a pair of budgie smugglers and tingle a few million teenage ginies. Just think of the rig you buy with the cash.

The vast majority of people on this site still shoot with a tape cam and you're asking if we're "out of touch"

Seriously though.... I'm a Dad 3 times over and my oldest (twins) are the dreaded 16. I can't believe the stuff they watch and listen to these days and of course it works exactly the other way around too. They just can not relate to my enjoyments either.

For the record though, I find kids today to be a little more accepting of the 'weird and outrageous' than we were at that age. Why that is I'm not sure. Maybe it has something to do with how fast things are changing in today's times, or maybe it has to do with the 'video game era' we live in now (my kids play so much xbox now that I've had to place daily time limits on the tv)..... or even the fact that they are exposed to so much more of the world due to the bottomless pit of the internet. But none the less, the video above is EXACTLY the kind of stuff you'd find my 2 older ones watching.

Of course when I think back on all of this... the same sort of scenario, or 'gap' occurred between myself and my parents when I was 16 and I could easily here my parents having this very conversation.... so maybe it has nothing to do with the kids today, or being out of touch. Maybe it's just that....
    we're growing up.

Fair point Bob, But before we lay the blame at the generation gap, consider that there's plenty of young folk here who aspire to quality video production.

But you could tingle a few million ginies on YouTube to finance your big prodution. Get that budgie smuggler and give it a go.

Uh-oh, did you see something shiny?

Yeah, my most-watched video on YT has something like 200 hits, that's it. It's discouraging when I know it's much better than a lot of the crap that gets a few million hits. To be fair, there is some decently high-quality stuff getting lots of hits as well.

The 'masses' will follow anything disposable...its just how trends are unfortunately.

    BUT

I shot this on my own and I'm almost up to 40,000 views...makes me happy to know that its not due to my piece being absolute trash!

    Also another good example:

Shot this with a team and it just broke 40,000 views...this time a bit 'viral' but its fun and again not some ridiculous tripe that gets 80,000,000,000 views...

Have faith fellas you CAN do good work and get noticed...especially with some of the work people on here do!

Just remember to ask yourself if you REALLY want to add to the pile of youtube fodder or perhaps give a bit more and be happy with what you have shared with people?

    Good post!

My sister watches that Shane Dawson crap. I absolutely agree, it sucks, and it is sickening that children watch it. But, COD is pretty fun, can't comment there.

I told myself I would never contribute to that crap and ever click on a video, but one day out of curiosity I did, and I think I puked in my mouth a little bit. I don't know anyone that watches that crap, but I'm glad I don't. There's a lot of little kid drones that eat this up all day..we can just hope it goes away..or at least you're not exposed to it.

My most popular video (about 48k) is one of those pet farewells I shot for a friend. That was only two or three hours of work including cutting, color-correction and uploading. And that actually used to be number two - number one being a test video that was used by Gizmondo (about 210k) and later deleted by me because it was pointless to keep it.

I don't think this is a new phenomenon. For very art movie there is a season of the funniest home videos on TV. Popular videos get clicks just because they are popular.

Some of this crap is actually fun to watch if you keep an open mind. I love internet shows like Nostalgia Critic and Cinema Snob and all this self-referential cameo stunts they do with the other internet reviewers.
