Default How user friendly is Mr. Osborne's suite of tools?

I use Blender 3D for its built-in NLE, node editor, title effects, (also a free download)
For DVD burning, I've been using Roxio's MyDVD basic (came with my Vista, and yes, the software is horribly limited when it comes to menu features, but does a great job burning it to DVD and playback from DVD is excellent)
    hi all,

i'm considering purchasing Vegas Pro but Mr. Osborne's "free" suite of tools for PC video capture is interesting. i've used other free software for DVD rips so i don't need a polished program. conversely, for web development, while one could certainly manually edit code with free programs, i found it more efficient to use Dreamweaver.

would the same be true with Vegas? what am i getting that cant be done with HDVsplit, AVIdub, Blender3D, and Nero/Roxio?

sorry for the noob question...i could download the progs and start playing but i'd like to save some time if, in the end, Vegas is the more appropriate option. FYI, all i plan to do is get the raw footage from my tapes, archive the tapes, and then burn the footage to DVDs (i guess) to watch (vids of family and etc.).

thanks in advance for any info,

    ty

I use Pinnacle Studio 11+ as noted before!
Now for the controversial bit - Very few questions are asked about Pinnacle software on this Forum. Why? Is it because there are so few users? OR is it because Studio 11+ users have less hassle with their editing suites than Vegas or Premier or etc. users?
    Think about it!!!!

I wait for the inevitable storm of assorted abuse from the disciples of Vegas etc.!

    Terfyn,

Is there support for 24p timelines in any of the Studio products?

I use HDVSplit as well and Premiere Pro CS3.
I film in 24p mode but have not used yet Pulldown removal software - I think I have read on this forum that when recording in PAL I woulndt need such thing?

Anyway I feel like I came a long way to finaly arrive at a video editing software that I actually like (and that doesnt crash every 20min)
I used to work with Avid Liquid 7.2 but in many situations it is pretty crap to work with compared to Premiere Pro.
Its simply no where near a 'pro' editing software but costs almost as much.
I actually started with Adobe Premiere 6.0 with Pinnacle DV500 (PCI card for video editing, its a few years ago) and later on with their more semipro ONE version, but all of those Pinnacle releases where often a pain to work with.

At my latest editing project I realised that my 2GB of RAM seems to be too little to work with while it took over 40 minutes to open a PremierePro project and Windows was swoping to the page file like mad. So definitely need to invest in more RAM with PremierePro.

For the editing/post-production work on the videos I do, I use Pinnacle Studio 11 Plus in conjunction with my HV20. Other than occasional program crashes, I'm not having problems with Pinnacle Studio thank God and I'm enjoying both this editing program and my HV20 (that I got for a 33th birthday present back in October) tremendously. I actually just entered the NLE world right after Passover ended back in April.

But I think the main things that keep my Pinnacle program from having problems other than the occasional crashes are:

    1. I had a separate internal Seagate 250 GB installed in my 3 year old Compaq Presario SR1020 NX computer. I use this hard drive for my video projects exclusively and the main hard drive is used for everything else not related to video. Had I not had this 250 GB separate hard drive installed, I believe I would have had more crashes (no matter what editing program I use let alone Pinnacle) .

    2. I keep the fancy transitions in my video productions to a minimum, e.g. to separate on segment from another. But otherwise almost all of my transitions are either cuts or dissolves and the fade at the beginning and end.

The video production for me is a hobby/side gig where I periodically videotape festive events/simchas (Hebrew for "celebration") for people at my local Orthodox synagogue. My day job though is working as a medical filing clerk in a neurology clinic.

    Yup!

I do the same, I havent seen any fancy transitions on TV or in any movies, dont really see the point with them at all, all they seem to do is be fodder for new users to include in their videos.

Vegas Pro 8 - upgraded from Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8. I needed - well ok, wanted - the flexibility to fiddle with codecs other than wmv.

Can't get a sensible answer from Pinnacle on this.
Studio 11+ supports 25p but as I am asking the question in a PAL country, the may have not taken the question about 24p seriously!

No. Studio11 is not able to handle 24p or 25p footage.

They recommend to use Liquid. If possible for you...

Added: I tested the 25p and Cinemode (I'm in PAL). They work splendid with Liquid7.2 and in Liquid11.
So there is no problem unless something else is meant.

Sony Vegas Pro 8 to edit. I capture with that or with HDVSplit. Had some glitchy stuff happen with both of them when trying to capture split scenes straight to a network drive, just doing a full tape capture now.

I'm using final cut pro 4 and IT'S HELL. My alternative is iMovie 3 and it's a slightly less firey hell. Time to move out of the dark ages, I guess.

    Sorry, just had to vent.

Final Cut Pro 5, capture & edit. JES Deinterlacer to remove pulldowns. DVD Studio Pro to make DVDs.

I follow this post's steps to remove pulldowns: http://hv20.com/showpost.php?p=8861&postcount=25

I'm an audio guy recently getting re-interested in video.
I'm using Sony Vegas 8 Pro for Video and some preliminary audio.
For building my final audio soundtrack I use Pro Tools 6.4. Cool thing is Vegas can share the VST plugins I use with Pro Tools (have VST-RTAS adapter for PT).

I also occasionally use Sound Forge 7 for quick audio tweaking.

But primarily it's Vegas, then Pro Tools for building the sound track.

    Default What video editting software

I am looking for a bit of advice. I am new to video/editting and want to buy a one stop program for capturing and burning DVD's from footage filmed on the HV20.

All I really want it to do is to capture (SD/HD), minor ediiting and burn DVD's in either SD or HD. I would also like the option to convert HD to SD when burning. I am looking at (and have looked at the specs but to be honest I do not really know what some of them mean or relate to) Pinnacle or Vegas at the moment but I know there are others. Which would you go for??

Lastly, and I am a little confused here, do I need the software to be able to burn both HD DVD and blu ray (as I understand these are currently two competing formats)? I guess I will also need to upgrade my current DVD writer for HD??

    Thanks,

Pinnacle Studio is the best choise to start with in my opinion.
Your DVD writer can not be updated to burn HD. You will need to buy a HD-DVD writer or a BluRay writer. The last one makes the best chance to survive the battle.

Vegas Platinum 8. Sells for $80 these days, supports 24p. Neither Ulead or Pinnacle are as advanced in terms of editing features.

    Eugenia,

Burning to Blu-Ray isn't supported by Vegas Platinum, is it?

No. Only Vegas Pro does that.

However, are you sure you want to buy an HD burner? Buying a PS3 or XBoX360 is cheaper, and they can both playback 1080/30p files without any problems.

    Thanks,
You can burn short lengths of HD to regular DVDs with a regular DVD burner (you get about 20 min of video on a single-layer disk). The DVDs will only play back in an HD-DVD player. No such option for blu-ray. However, AFAIK, you can only author these kinds of discs with the Ulead or Pinnacle programs or Nero 8, not with Vegas (though you can do all your editing in Vegas as use the other programs to author to DVDR).

nolonemo, this is not correct. There IS such an DVD option for Blu-Ray, you just need Vegas Pro to get the feature. However, even with HD-DVD not all HD-DVD players are compatible with this trick.
