Default Communicating in the modern world.

Communicating in the modern world is the theme for a local shorts contest i plan on enterning, but the theme just seems to stump me and i cant come up with any basic ideas of a short revolving around that theme. Does anyone have any starting ideas? i know this isnt very professinal but any help is appreciated.

one idea that comes to mind is about the IRONY OF IT ALL: people nowadays claim to be "more connected" but at the same time , they become increasingly isolated in a myriad of "virtually connected islands" aka just a shadow of a real communication..

    starring Keanu Reeves :-P

You gotta be more clever then phones. You should make something about how different languages make it hard to meet or understand someone.
Do not view me as a critic or a judge. I just tell it how I see it, valuable or not.

you should focus on creating some kind of conflict related to how people communicate, not just "fetish-ize" phones and gadgets as the essence of that...

the most interesting types of conflict are usually based upon our human nature

i.e.: without THE NEED TO COMMUNICATE, no phones would have been invented at all...

but they all must star keanu reeves, just to keep the simple people interested.

Seriously though, my next door neighbor speaks Arabic. I only understand Arabic but I cannot speak it, this makes it very hard for me to communicate with him and we see each other outside on a regular basis. His sister is very cute but also she can only speak Arabic, kinda locks me down sometimes.

yeah, thanks guys. But the film is suppose to reflect how peolpe communicate in the modern world, so do you think i should go in to a positive or negative feel for modern communication?

Both - modern means of communication allow us to be candid. I can bluntly 'write' my mind via tech. Whereas in person I am very shy and can tell people have trouble interpreting my intentions.

    Like this:

I compliment people, women more often than men.
I feel there is too little direct communication and goodwill so I like to tell people if I think they are cool, sexy, beautiful, or skilled; that I admire something about them as a human being or what they do. And I get mixed reactions ranging from blushing to surprise to confusion.

Communicating, or flirting via tech, allows the recipient time to digest the comment; time to respond, or not, and time to ponder. The tenderness of interpersonal communication is tempered by corresponding electronically. Tech allows people to reach us and yet be unreachable, if we choose.

Nobody talks to their own friggin' neighbours anymore, yet we routinely chat with people in Denmark and Kyrgyzstan while playing Rainbow Six on PS3.

you need both forces playing to create interesting conflict, otherwise you would be lacking dramatic strength

you could still have a positive or negative set of values at the climax point, that would define the story itself... just try to avoid doing the preachy story saying "CHILDREN, MODERN COMMUNICATIONS IS BAD/GOOD FOR YA!"
