Since we are doing crazy ideas:
The winner is the one getting the most hits on Youtube.
One condition though: Pets and babies not allowed.

I will check what would be possible for further contests about prizes. If we can, I'd like to set up something with our new Merchandising threads.
Ideally, we could ask for a money contribution from anyone that enters (paypal transfert), and with all that we would have collected, we could get some gears to offer as prizes, accordingly to the money collected. That's a suggestion though!
Donations would be on a voluntary basis, depending your budget. What do you think? It means more work, but I'd be up to manage it, as it seems to be a good idea/offer. Rather than offering prizes on our own, like we did in previous contest.
We could update the prizes thread accordingly, maybe with an excel list with all the donators per round.
Let's discuss about it, we still have until August 1st to set this up.
One of the problem with prices for those of us in far away places is that freight, duties and taxes might be more than the value of the item. On the other hand it should not be too difficult to get some companies to offer a price.

Quick questions:
1) Did you guys liked the deadline for this one?
2) Should we keep the 2-weeks deadline?
3) Is anyone still interested in the contest? =P
We need to be creative about this:
We want to make videos
We want feedback.
Winning is nice.
We all have different interests and time constraints.
We want something more than the footage section.
How about a much looser format:
Anyone can suggest themes or rules and invite others to participate.
Anyone can submit anything they like.
Then once a month we have a feedback/judging session.
It could go something like this:
*For the participants in Drape's deep focus theme the best entry is...
*For the participants in Huey's radio play the winner is...
*We enjoyed the crazy entry from Playing even if it took him 6 month to complete.
*Welcome to the newcomer with the entry shot on Red/iPhone/pin hole camera.
Last day of every month is cut off day and all feedback must be submitted within one week.
Purpose: Feedback, fun, recognition.

Well, if everyone who wanted to make some type of story could choose their own theme, and nobody else had an entry on the same theme, everyone would be a 'winner' and we could get feedback. We could call it the 'Footage' thread.
I think that one of the advantages of having a single theme in a contest period is that it can help people get past the first question of "What will I make a short movie about?"
The next advantage can be that there is more likelihood of commonality and so each film-maker can learn from techniques used by the others on the same theme.
As for timing, I found this last 3 months was good to fit in with my work and family obligations, but I also went through a bit of a process to find talent which took some time. Shorter periods are possible, but that requires more regular thinking up of a 'theme'.
I was going to suggest 4 times a year, linked to seasons, but that would just cause a side discussion. However 4 times a year somehow might be about right?
We could contemplate a forward agenda of 'themes' so that Playing can start work now on the theme for Antman #61 in February 2014.
It might also be interesting to have a 'technique'' theme like "shallow depth of field" (Sorry to Almo and others who would find this distressing, but it might mean we get a better idea about how to do it properly or for good effect)
Others in this category might be Matrix style bullet-time, image morphing, "ghosts", minatures, green screen, CGI, aerial etc.
We could also think about 'teams'. X creates a script, Y does the footage, Z does the edit (and they need to swap roles over a 3 theme cycle?)
I'd need to check back over the previous themes before I suggested one, to avoid repetition.
But I agree that we all enjoy the feedback, fun and recognition.
Anna, because someone counted wrong. Then he fixed it, I swear. Seems he had everyone fooled, except you.
New contest is now up. Starts on Sunday August 12th and ends on September 1st.
MrMicah had a good idea, and I think some other folks here seems to share his idea. I'll let him explains it, but I think it would be a good option for the next round.
I've just suggested a new theme to Drapeama for the next contest, which might run to the end of the month, after that we could try the over-lapping cycle concept?
Some more detail to help people understand, including how to let the winner choose a future competition theme:
#36 Announced soon; Ends 31 August (perhaps)
#37 Announced 1 September; Ends 30 September <Maybe have an online poll from a list of options>
#38 Announced 1 September; Ends 31 October <Maybe the same online poll selects this theme as well>
#39 Announced 1 October; Ends 30 November <Theme chosen by winner of #36>
#40 Announced 1 November; Ends 31 December <Theme chosen by winner of #37>
#41 Announced 1 December; Ends 31 January <Theme chosen by winner of #38> etc
Each competition cycle allows 2 months to produce something, but there is a new competition starting and ending each month, over-lapping. You just need a short cycle to start things off, which would be #37 on my suggestion above.
We'll discuss about it here, as it's the best place so far!
I personally like the 2month with an overlapping month idea. It could keep things rolling. We would only need someone to post the new round each 1st of the month, and then, it would leave more time to judges/people to post their reviews.
What do you think guys?![]()
It does mean that the judges have a month for their judging and comments, without breaking the cycle.
However, I'm sure the judges would give their feedback in less than a month.
Other possible questions:
Q1. But if there is a poll with all the themes, what about people starting on a theme early?
A1. Good Point. Maybe the Mods can set up a poll where the actual themes are not revealed until the contest date? We'd get to choose from options like "What's behind Door 1", "Door 2" or "Door 3".
Q2. The winner of #36, gets to choose the theme for #39? Doesn't that mean he/she has a huge time advantage?
A2. Ummm. Yes. I think one of the rules for the Antman contests lets the winner enter. Maybe we can consider if the rules are varied? The winner of #36 could enter #39 but they are not eligible to win? Maybe they could be a guest judge for #39?
Feel free to throw more questions around
We could also have a pool of themes people like and approve of. Then on the last day of the month a mod spins the wheel and publishes the theme chosen by chance. This way no one has much of an advantage.

We could, from all the suggestions sent via PM, open multiples polls in 4-5 threads, with let's say, 4 options (I think we can't add more than that) to it and let people vote for their favourites. At the end of the polls, let's say 1 month, we would have a preferred theme. Then, we would have 4-5 theme in advance. The problem is that if themes are shown to public before an actual contest, one can work on something and no one would know.
What I think would be better is the blank options poll. People vote for numbers and a mod set the themes behind the numbers before it starts, let's say in a short video (password protected) and release it public the date of the announcement. That way it would be a good and fair way I guess.
But let's keep this simple for now: send suggestions via PM and we pick up one for a contest, but nothing too much in advance to prevent one to work on something way before an actual contest. This contest is based on good intentions, so..!
I already have a list of suggestions from MrMicah. I should list them all in the suggestion thread. So I'll be ready to start the next theme just after this round.
Unless someone has any objections, I think we'll go that way.
Round #36 will end on September 30th (30th at 11:59pm), to close the month, and give people a whole month like for the upcoming rounds. So it'll give judges enough time to review the shorts while the round #37 will still be running.
Round #37 will start on September 1st and end October 31st.
Round #38 will start on October 1st and end November 30th.
I'll change the deadline. Hope it'll bring more people...
That's great.
