Ahhh, I just re-read Slyyde's post, and he has the separate zoom buttons hard wired into the main remote. That wasn't the idea I had. I thought I could just have the three buttons as a stand alone on my top handle. Oh well, it was a nice thought lol.

I really like Appalacio's flat plug idea. Nice and clean and easily removed. What kind of plug is that? I tried to find one today at the Source, but they didn't have much there. I have a much better store close by with everything electronically imaginable, so I'll go check out what they have. If they don't have it, nobody will.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

I finally had a chance to mess around with my spare remote yesterday to build my version of the fake LANC remote hack. I like the outcome. I now have a working (odd) remote, and with the addition of an "extension cord" I can use it at the top of a handle or a tripod and have a hand free to focus

I can't believe how easy it was to modify the remote with a 2.5mm mono chassis jack. I got the idea here and put my own twist on it. Basically, I opened up the remote, removed the IR LED with a soldering iron, then added a couple of short wires and soldered a 2.5mm mono chassis jack in place of the IR LED. After a quick mod to cut the "switch" a bit shorter (see pic 1), the jack fir perfectly into place in the remote where the IR LED was! It's like it was made to fit I didn't even have to glue it, it snapped perfectly into the remote's body after I screwed the ring and washer all the way on to the jack! Then I snapped the remote together with no glue at all and it's perfect I then took the IR LED and soldered it onto a male 2.5mm mono jack. I had to remove a bit of plastic on the opening with my Dremel tool to allow the IR LED to slide through the black body of the male jack (pic 2). All I need to do to have a "normal" working remote is snap the male jack with IR LED into the remote and presto I made up an extension cord to use on a tripod or a top handle as well. I am going to make another one for a handle though that is a 90 degree male jack, and have the straight extension cord for the tripod.

Here are the pics. Thanks for your ideas boys!

    Cheers,

    Aaron

I've done something similar by using an extension cable. Clever idea to use something that's "removable".
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

I cannot find a right angle 2.5mm male jack in mono, only stereo. I don't believe anyone makes a mono male right angle jack. Not a big deal anyway, as I learned after all this something interesting. My remotes work from behind the HV40 camera and on the top of a handle without the cord! It is a powerful remote system, and only a few positions don't work well (spots I wouldn't use the remote from anyway). The area above the tripod handle from behind the camera and at the top of the handle above the camera work great with the unmodified remote lol. I didn't need to modify a thing. Of well, it was a fun project anyway, and it may come in handy at some point.

    Cheers,

    Aaron

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you to all of you that contributed to this thread.

I wanted my toslink cable to stay attached to the tripod not the camera so I could quickly remove the camera if need be. This was my solution. I cut, bent and painted some aluminum and attached it the the bottom of the tripod with commercial doubled sided tape. There is a slot for the toslink cable to slide into. Everything else is strapped on with velcro. The toslinc cable is 18" long.

I'm currently using this for filming hunts. The setup is working great, now if only the deer would cooperate.

Hi guys! Someone may be useful my experience!
I'm doing a remote control on the basis of the microcontroller pic16f873. I needed only some of the buttons of WL-D87: "Start", "T", "W", "Photo", "TV screen". Remote control making pulse packet of square wave 38kHz. Durations can be seen in the pictures.

Vmg, I had to remove your links (at least one opened a bunch of porn-laden pop-ups when I clicked it). You can either re-post the fullsize .jpgs directly to HV20.com or try posting the links again without including the '.html' extension.
