    Question Most needed sound effects?

I'd like to know, what's usually the sound effects you need the most?
Just got a ZoomH2 and maybe i'd be interested to help other in their project by recording various sounds in 24bits/96khz quality, if it's possible to me of course.
You can just reply with what you'd like/need.

    24bits/96khz quality
Probably over the top. 48Khz / 16 bit is plenty good enough and that's what most people are probably working with on video projects.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

You're right on this, it's enough.
But it can always be down-converted from 24/96 to 16/48 using eac3to.
To me it's just always better starting with the highest quality and then exporting in a compressed format (HDV > DVD) like .wav > .ac3.
I mean if i can do it...just saying.

I can supply some audio bits of my days on the rifle range, might help those looking for an authentic "rifle crack" sound.
It's Mono though... but I'm sure one of you have the necessary skills to fake it into stereo!

I could use some sounds like 'hammer click' (pistol) and 'shell-hit-floor' (pistol). Maybe Bif could help us out?

Yes. Primary research takes its toll.

If you could get there again and record some sounds again, recording in DV mode (audio in PCM 16/48) that would be even better.
And yes, Bif could be very helpfull for stuff like this. I'd really like to have some gun coking sounds in PCM. The best would be real gunshots : 9mm, .357, etc...

I've got so many sound effect CDs, I reckon I could make the soundtrack for World War 3!

But funnily enough, whenever I go to find something specific, it's never quite what I need.

I dunno, Drape. I think ambient sounds are the hardest to find. Everyday environmental sounds, like large crowds murmuring, street sounds, office sounds, airports, train stations, and the rarest of all, small empty rooms.

What is the name they give to that sound, the "hum" of an empty room?

EDIT: And I would kill for a really good, clean, sweet "lonely wind" sound. All the ones I have are hissy, blustery, and contaminated. And most of them have some microphone rumble.

    Insanity.

I trawled my local library - in Wellington, New Zealand - and found they had a great, albeit aging sound effects category in the audio section. Lots of BBC SoundFX CDs. Bombay train station, chirping birds happy in the glade, foghorns - you name it. And Krute, the BBC series has lots of wind too; howling through yacht spars, rattling windows, thunder et al.

Thanks, Doc. I'll go there right now.
    .

2nd EDIT: G*d! That's a lotta sounds!!! Funny thing, the very first sound effect record I ever bought was a BBC vinyl LP record. That was when I was using Super-8..... Since then, I've bought scores of sound effect CDs, and as a result I have probably five versions of every sound! If I'd known the BBC had released all their effects on CD, I'd have probably only needed to buy one set!

But heck, they're dear, aren't they!

I'll see what i can do later this week. I'll try to find a quiet place to record it.
The airport and similar sounds will be harder for me as i don't have any near where i live.

Oh, hey, thanks, Drape! Appreciate it. I think it's probably one of the hardest sounds to capture faithfully, so good luck!

It's a roomtone. Used to lay a consistent noise floor under a dialog. It's also useful if you need to notch something out.

"Roomtone", eh? Well, who would have thought of that? [Really embarrassed emoticon]

Who cares what it's called? As long as you know what it's for.

It warms my heart to see the community taking an interest in the sound part of video production.

As i remmember you telling Oh so often that (and it's true) 50% of a movie/short/video is the audio, and now that i have the equipment to do a faire enough&good quality, i just want to share and help other people in their work.
Of course, in the ideal world, i'd like to do it for something : i'd like to be able to sell the sounds...at a ridiculously low price for budget filmmaker like me, of course...

I think white noise is the term for that room hum, or at least that's what a friend of mine calls it.

This is a good idea, an audio exchange, or marketplace. I was thinking the same thing the other day, how to connect to somebody in a different part of the world (much like Dr. Benway's suggestion) to pick up ambient sound of a bar/or cafe.

In my case, I'd be willing to pay a slight fee, via pay pal, something like 10-20 dollars, If somebody in France would record a couple different ambient cafes where occasional french chatter perked up.

All I could probably offer right now, on the sound front, are sounds of power tools being run.

No. It's roomtone, I tell you.
White noise is a random signal (or process) with a flat power spectral density. In other words, the signal contains equal power within a fixed bandwidth at any center frequency. White noise draws its name from white light in which the power spectral density of the light is distributed over the visible band in such a way that the eye's three color receptors (cones) are approximately equally stimulated.

    Two good point Daniel.
By doing it, recording sound effects, i personally think i actually help the community.
By selling them at a ridiculously low price, at least it help me and the users.

How much you guys would expect to pay for the sounds?
I'll try to make a price list for the different lenght of the clips.
