Mechanism noise

Sorry, if this has been posted else where, but man is this camera LOUD. I believe the HV20 forum creator had the same problem? The mechanism is so loud that the built-in mic picks it up and its on the soundtrack bigtime. I never really intended to use the built-in mic but jeez now I have no choice as that is just unacceptable. Hopefully with some use that may disappear. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Not sure what your experiences are, but MANY other small and larger cams do exactly the same thing.

I just got my HV20 and I agree, it is way louder than my old cameras.. However there is a fix, well one that I have found works for me, and I have only had the camera < 5 hours.

1. Turn on the audio level so you can see the levels the mic is picking up on the LCD, you will notice in complete silence the level is 40-50% of max.
2. Flip to manual mode, use the joystick to go to MIC, press up, press left a few times till you see the audio level drop to a couple of blocks

Now the camera noise is not recorded, and noise from you clicking or zooming is greatly reduced. Check out my dog in garden footage (in footage section of this forum) to hear how quiet it can be (and still pick up bird sounds)

At first I didn't understand if you were saying that the camera was loud to your ears as you were filming or that a lot of ambient noise was recorded on the tape. What Critters said is one option and of course the other option, if you don't want any sound at all is just drop the audio level to zero when your editing and rendering in your RLE editor. If you were wanting to use the built in mic for recording voice or something, Critters adjustment might make the audio lower than you want it for voice and an external mic could be used.

Critters, Thank you, I will definitely try that out. Sorry about that bluegrass, yes, ambient noise recorded is the tape mechanism. My first camcorder, the company I work for we use PD150's and the tape mechanisms are pretty much dead silent. No big deal, I bought this for it's picture quality and that's looking pretty good!!

Yeah, we're all buying the HV20 for its image quality, not audio quality. Check out some of the threads on adding an on-camera, external mic. They can help reduce noise being recorded.
