Casette tape for HV30?
I just bought almost new Canon HV30.
In the box, I found DV casette tape Panasonic DVC.
What kind of tape should I buy... I record mostly my wife, kids and friends? Is Panasonic good solution or not? I heard thet Sony tapes are not good for HV30?
Do I have to use Standard play (SP), or Long play (LP) on that casette?

Panasonic makes some good tapes. Sony does too. SP and LP are only available on standard definition video, and unless you need to squeeze a lot of time out of a single tape you should stick with SP. High def on the other hand doesn't have a LP mode.
You heard wrong. Sony is just as good as any other reputable brand.
I suggest you use only SP (60 min.), never LP - LP is more susceptible to dropouts.
Ok, as i can understand Digital Signal is not like the old hard times of analog video tapes and cameras.
So when in the past someone was turning from SP to LP the actual signal was different with lowest performance on play.
With the coming of DV video the signal changed to digital so no more magnetic stuff to read the tape, digital video tapes stores DATA 010101010010 etc
I dont understand so why this would have affection on LP mode in a DV Cassete, the algorithm changes and compresses the DATA to fill in the same gap of tape?
I havent noticed any difference using LP of SP on a DV Tape.. except from the tape of 60 minutes turns to 90, instead of the analog that turns the 60 minutes tape to 120 minutes (as it slows the motor about 50%)
Is there any technical explanation why NOT use LP in DV Tapes when shooting in SD?
As said above: LP is more susceptible to dropouts.
Dropout = complete loss of digital signal for about a second.
This is purely an academic argument, though: SP and LP modes are only available when recording in standard definition DV, which is not recommended. High definition HDV only uses one tape speed. Even if you plan to edit and finish in standard def, you will get better results recording in HDV and setting the camera's playback to "DV LOCK." That gives you the best of both worlds: SD DV for painless editing, while your 'master' tapes are high def HDV.

I can buy Panasonic AY-DVM60FE, Verbatim DVC60, Sony DVM60PR and TDK tapes.
Which of them should I buy, do you have the model of the tape?
I have few of the Panasonic DV camera, Panasonic AY-DVM60FE miniDV tape.
Pana and Sony used without any problems for years. Had some drops with TDK. Didn't try Verbatim, but if their tapes are as good as their DVD, go for it.

Girl, my friend gave me TDK video casette tape to try it on my Canon HV30.
Can I use it on my HDV recorder or not?

I have used multiple tapes in my old jvc minidv. I used fuji, panasonic, sony, and then trouble struck with maxell. Unfortunately perhaps i didnt clean the head before using the maxell so i had glitches with audio drop out and pixelated visuals. Guess thats why the argument is made against mixing up tapes by different manufacturers.
I tried to get the head repaired the guy just got my money and couldnt really fix it. Now i use them sometimes as 'broadcast' cams just to supply feed. I since switched to the canon hv camcorder series and have since used panasonic and sony tapes only and to this day havent had any problems at all no drop outs on hdv and no audio/visual problems.

I think you cannot shoot in LP with HDV.
Correct. LP is for SD/DV only.
BTW, avoid both LP and 80-minute tapes like the plague...
I'm just now battling to transfer my cousin's LP DV tapes to DVD, their 10-year old JVC camcorder died.
Dropouts and sound problems abound, and a LP 80/120 minute tape just refuses to play on my Canon.
In fact, both JVC and Canon manuals warn against using LP, they say the tapes may not play on another camcorder, even of the same make and model!
Tapes are cheap, don't try to save a few $ by recording in LP, you may yet regret it!
