Default Kingston class 6 recognised as class 2

Hi, I bought a two class 6 kingston 32gb cards off ebay and when I put it in the Canon HF S100 cam it showed it's class 2. I reinitialised it but still shows the same problem, says unable to record in mxp because of the card...could it be a fake?...help...

    PS: Please ignore heading Sandisk

Many disks are remarked (ie counterfit) and sold on ebay as something they are not, based on the idea that most people won't notice.

And the people that bought that super bargain basement deal are often too embarrassed to admit how stupid they were to think they could get one for half the usual price, so they don't return them.

Since disks aren't that expensive anyway you are better off with a reputable, real dealer. At the low end of cost you get what you pay for. Paying a couple bucks more buys you peace of mind.

You might also want to avoid Kingston as a brand. Your HF S100 User Manual recommends SD/SDHC memory cards made by Panasonic, Toshiba, and SanDisk.

If I were you, I'd contact the seller and negotiate a return. If they refuse (or if you don't get your money back) note it in their feedback.

Thanks, I have filed a complaint on paypal, waiting to hear from them, I called up kingston and they said the card should have a serial number etched on it, mine doesn't have one so they asked me to send pictures. Could you please let me know of a reputable site I can get 32gb class4/class6 memory cards at a good price from for the hfs 100? The ones on bhphotovideo and amazon look very expensive

Newegg is a good source for cheap flash media.

For 32GB, yeah, they will be. Do you really need all that space? I thought I would need something like that for my HF S100, but I decided on a 16GB Class 6 "just to get me started" - or so I thought. I've never even come close to filling it up.

So take a serious look at what you're filming. If you're filming concerts all the time, then yeah, you might need 2+ hours of space at MXP. I shoot video of my 4 month old daughter right now, and those clips are usually no more than a few minutes each. So a dozen clips might only be 30 minutes total... giving me plenty of room left over on my 16GB Class 6 at MXP.

I just be sure that at the end of each session/day, I Log and Capture everything and wipe the card clean.

Kingston is also OEM producer. Your Panasonic or Toshiba cards might have memory made by Kingston inside...

Agreed.......8 GB is enough for me and those are only $15-$17 USD. I mostly shoot sports (mainly Baseball) and the 44 min MXP mode is plenty. I copy each game to my laptop, delete files on card, then record next game. Works perfectly so far.

Thanks lowell, which brand did you go with, I need it for the same purpose as you since have our first baby due soon so guess will go with a 16gb one first. Do intend using the mxp mode and good to know 16gbs does the job.

Kingston is actually a fairly big brand name that makes memory for a lot of other brands. They can be cheaper because the other brands have to mark them up to make a profit by reselling them.

I've used a lot of Kingston CF and SDHC cards without problems. I've bought them from Microcenter, B&H and several others. Sandisc is also good. There is a lot of room in the write speed of the better brands.

Cheap brands often don't even meet the advertised speed or barely meet it. The biggest problem is that each batch is different and there are a lot of variations.

There are lots of posts of testing done on some other boards like DVXuser for use in the EX1. There is free software to perform the tests. Its been a big deal for the EX1 for a 2-3 years because there is a big price difference between an SDHC card in an express card adapter and a SxS card.

Do a search, find some info, start a thread here now that its an issue with HF Sxx series cameras.

Hi I did call up Kingston and they confirmed that since the cards I bought don't have a serial number on them they are fake, did send them pictures too and awaiting response, in the meanwhile have filed for a refund on paypal. What's surprising is that KIngston support said that 32gb class 6 sdhc cards won't work on the canon hf s100, their class 4 ones would, if Kingston did make memory for other manufacturers why would that be? Note that the fake card did work but showed as a class 2on the cam..

Cards that are too slow will initially work on a short test, will fail on a long shot. Depends on how the camera handles it. On the EX1 you get an error message and it stops recording. In a sense that's better than dropped frames when you don't realize its happening.

There are many aspects to the contruction of the chips. Multi layer verus single layer, etc.

    a) don't fall for burst writing speed, look at continuous writing speed specs.

    b) don't fall for average speed.

    c) test before counting on it for 'real' work.

As I said before there is batch to batch variation. Some class 4 test the same speed as class 6. I have some that do that.

I bought THIS 8 GB CARD from Newegg and it works perfectly well with mxp mode. I will buy another as back-up.

My HG20 has a 60 GB HDD already, but because I shoot a lot of sports, I use flash cards to keep the games separated. It makes it easier to manage that way.

I purchased the card at the same time as my HF S100 at my local camera shop... they have competitive prices and are certainly reputable.

The exact one I purchased can be seen (and ordered) here:

    http://www.arlingtoncamera.com/shop/...B-10087-0.html

You can view their selection of SDHC Cards here:

    http://www.arlingtoncamera.com/shop/...rds-992-1.html

I hope that helps... and congrats on the baby! By the way, they might not let you film the actual delivery (and you may even be thinking that you wouldn't WANT to) but have the camera ready to roll and right there with you. As soon as the baby was born and on the little incubator table getting cleaned up, they encouraged me to grab the camera and start filming. For me, the coolest clip I'll ever film in my lifetime was the first 5 minutes of my daughter's life. Those 5 minutes alone were worth the price of the HF S100.

    Best of luck to you!

That's because they tend to be the "real thing". Actually B&H and amazon price merchandise as competitive as possible for "real" products. There have been warnings of counterfeit media on ebay for a LONG time.

The advice to look at lower card capacity is more than valid. For my HF100's I carry 3 - 5 8GB cards and change when one is 80% full (file allocation table error possibility jumps dramatically in the last 10%-15% of media capacity in any media). For short projects I find a few 4GB cards more than fill the bill.

    .
Patriot is a "Johnny Come Lately" me too product that I've seen a lot of complaints of not being able to keep up with the camera, and sudden data loss.

Do yourself a BIG FAVOR and quit taking chances with inferior media. This is a pretty good value, while you can likely get by with Class (4) for about $18 (SanDisk, even) this Class (6) will function properly and keep up with the new T2i if you should go that route in the future.

Many will "chime in" and yell loudly that they use Patriot, A-Data, Transcend, and Dane-Elec with no problems, but when that cheap stuff lets you down...

    ...You lose video...

Hi guys, just got a full refund from paypal through the ebay supplier and bought original sandisk ones from newegg..in the meanwhile Kingston who replied back saying were fake cards after sent them pictures was not even interested in knowing where I got the fake cards from to take them off the market, I guess them not being proactive about protecting their brand is to their own detriment, would lead some other users to think that Kingston card quality is bad not realising they could be fakes

Just ordered two of these Kingston 8 GB Class-4 cards. Hope they are not bogus. The price was good and so were the reviews.........

I'll find out when they get here.

Those are great cards, racer-x. I have five 4gig versions for my SD780, never had a problem.
