Yes Crowning.... the cage rig i made out of PVC pipe. painted it black then attached a flash shoe mount so i was able to put the mic and LED light. Matte Box is made out of a plastic candy bowl. I cut a whole to it then glued a 58mm filter ring.

    That's it for now.

Arbi...nice DIY setup. Saw it when you posted it....had no idea it was all DIY until you said so. That makes it even better.

    How about those rails? DIY?

The rails look to be around the same size as the cage. I would guess PVC as well.

Cold shoe are from an old plastic toy camera. and the Quick release mount I was able to carnage from a junk broken tripod.

And i go not only for the looks... it performs well....I've used it in an expid and i could say that I'm happy with it.

Buying a pro rig in my country is difficult so i sorted out by building one.....

Can someone explain (or post a link) why these rigs are necessary and what they offer?
I'm guessing the rails are for smooth zooming (how do you keep focus during this?)
and the handles are just to make the DSLR more ergonomic to use. I haven't quite got around to ordering my 550d but maybe these things'll become more apparent the second I do.

The basic premise is something to allow the operator to hold the camera steady. The 35mm "form factor" does not lend itself to real stability when you have to hold it out in front of your face to use the LCD as your viewfinder.

So the "rig" starts out as some kind of simple shoulder brace and get sometimes insanely complex from there. I use an inexpensive ($100) SpiderBrace 2 "Combo" (www.spiderbrace.com) and an LCD viewfinder loupe, quick release on the bottom of the camera compatible with my tripod and leave it at that.

For audio I use a ZoomH2 recorder on a simple stand placed close to the talent and don't try to put anything like that on the camera.

    Lightweight and simple for me.

My avatar shows part of it.

Why are you molesting this poor bum when he's clearly trying to get some rest? I hope you gave him enough money to buy a 40 oz.
