    Default A Beginning question

I just got a HV20 and have been shooting in 60i and editing in Premiere CS3. Editing in 24p is all new to me. Can someone explain to me what all the talk about 'pulldown' is about? I seem to be able to capture 24p in CS3 fine... or am I missing a step?

    Any help would be appreciated

    Brad

The HV20 does not record true 24p, and so you need to "remove pulldown" in order to get a real 24p. Otherwise, you should not be using the 24p template on CS3, because HV20's 24p is inside a 60i stream.

well it does record true 24p but when it goes to the tape it is kept in a 60i container

I agree with you Limi.... The issue is do you get 24 fps non-interlaced out put. The camera is set up to shoot to allow that output, and it does a great job. Pull down removal is a final processing step that will strip away the 60i container, leaving you with a true 24p file format.

Interestingly, I though I could not shoot 24p for SD with this camera. But with Cineform's NEOHDV you can shoot 24p in HDV, then capture and down convert to 16:9 DV 24p.... Works fantastic !

Yeah, After Effects can do that too; pricey though.

But how can you show this on anything? Doesn't your DVD/TV only play at 60i anyway, so it has to have the container to show?
My apologies if this shows my ignorance - but I am definitely ignorant on this subject! I would like to understand it better ...

Most film originated DVDs are encoded in "24p" and the DVD player does the 3:2 pulldown on the fly when it send out the 60i signal. So, no, you don;t necessarily need to make it 60i first. It just depends on your intended output medium. (Like, if you were going to make a VHS for what ever reason... that WOULD have to be put back to 60i. )

I'm sorry I'm a newbie too. In vegas pro 8, how exactly do you do this after capturing in 1080 60i format? Or do you do this while capturing?

    Default Finally :-)

    YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

finally someone that has more or less the same doubts that I've been having and have had to much shame to ask.

1 - What is the main reason for PULL-DOWN?

    2 - What is this PUUL-DOWN?

3 - I have Vegas 7 and have the European version of the HV20 (this is 25p / 50i ) this must be the PAL equivelent ( I think )

PLEASE, can some one help me out one this

    Best regards,

    Tiago

1 and 2: it's added duplicated frames or removal of frames or blending of interlaced frames in order to bring these frames at a number per second that legacy TVs can playback as they expect it to. At the center of the issue, it is needed because of legacy hardware and designs (think as back as 1880 and 1950). Although in the HV20's case is more of Canon doing tricks in order to go around HDV standard's limitations.

    3. You don't need to remove pulldown, your 25p footage does not have extra or interlaced frames or non-native streams. It's only for the 24p mode.

    Default hello

Thank you for your prompt reply.

But now I am even more confused. 25p versus 24p now this one really knocked me out...

So how do I film in the famous Canon HV20 24p with my cam??????

    Best regards,

    Tiago

Your camera is a PAL camera Patryn.
24p and pulldown is only for NTSC cameras.
You will shoot in 25p(PAL) and all this pulldown wont affect you.
    Whose a lucky boy then?

Just got a copy of NEO HDV. Sure makes the whole process a lot easier.
