Default What Drug adds to filmmaker creativity the most?

Hey guys. I've been experimenting with some substances over the last 9 months or so and I'm rediscovering the value of psychedelics/amphetamines/depressants/ ect... in filmmaking ideas, as far as creativity goes. I've found a use for about every substance for one reason or another to give me alternate perspectives and dimensional shifts to see the world through. Right now I would definitely say that pot is my favorite medicinal substance to increase perception about just abouit everything in the realm of art/film. That being said, I've been through a life changing course of events that led me to this path (unforseen) and I have NOT done any filmmaking in a LOOOOONG time to test my newly discovered thoughts. I plan on soaking a little bit longer in my new skin as a newly divorced man, in a long forgotton world of single women, booze, and music. I'm more awake than ever, yet I'm holding back on opening Willie Wonka's factory back up to show my new candies " if anybody understands "

    For actual filming:
psychedelics - Will make you lose focus.
amphetamines - Will make your camera work jerky.
depressants - Will make you lethargic.

Stoned is possible but I found it added nothing, especially in a room of 20 other people who were not. For editing/writing/ideas sure. But for actual filming drugs don't do lalalala.

I agree with NXB. On the actual set, drugs are your worst enemy. Do you really want that 12 hour shoot to feel like 24 hours? Or for it to go by so fast that you miss stuff? No, actual filming on a set is best done sober. However, almost all of my really good writing sessions have been accompanied by pot. Editing can go both ways. On the one hand, editing while high can give you some really different creative visions that you might not have had sober, but on the other hand, it can really make a long editing session drag on. As far as amphetamines and depressants, stay away from that lalalala (including alcohol). I have seen too many lives get lalalalaed up from drug addiction, and it is so definitely not worth it. ::annoying rant over::

Coffee and a mild hangover. I've been helping antman shoot and it's how I ended up the last few. night before shooting at bars and not getting out till 2-3am then on set at 9....

Gotto agree with everything Kool Penguin said .

EEEventually chemicals ( pharmasueticools) will suck the soul right outta ya...

And if you are stoned during a shoot you better be REALLY REALLY proficient at the craft ... camera/sound/lighting and all the etc that goes along with a good production or you just end up wasting a day.

Sounds like you are rediscovering your self. Reminds me of Terrence Mckenna who has some awesome videos about exploring oneself using drugs.

Enjoy your new freedom....and reaquainting your self with you now. Enjoy the peace that can be with being out being a couple. Enjoy fresh air and excercise too as it all really helps one to feel good.

LSD, and of course, pot is good for stimulating the creativity. Just scribble down whatever you come to think of when high and then try to make sense of it while you're sober. Never use drugs while shooting, hardest thing ever hehe.

Not many people would be honest about experimenting with drugs. I don't think your gonna increase your perceptions with false realities, if their not there sober, they aint gonna be while your high. YOU may think they are. but in all actuality, your gonna be the only one that thinks your ideas are great. While most likely everyone else thinks their lame. just my two cents.

Did your Meth movie get you going on this drug kick?

What makes this reality right, and those that appear under the influence false?

I just don't understand what makes them false, they're still the real deal. Just from another angle. You're telling me what you experience when, i.e., drunk isn't reality?

It isn't an accurate perception of reality.

For example, a friend of mine watched the room around him turn 90 degrees (walls became the ceiling/floor, and vice-versa) when he got drunk. Obviously, the room didn't really turn on its side like that. He perceived that it did but that doesn't make it reality.

None of it is false or real.
Work your way up mountains or slide down them valleys...there is no pill, no stone, no place to roam where you can truley escape....tommorow always comes . The sun and moon will shine eternal. Asking what is real?

The most important lesson drugs ever taught me is that reality is subjective.

    Hey Braceface, welcome back.

    Good experiment.
Are you going to do some new stuff and list the substances you were on as gear?
    -HV30
    -35mm adaptor
    -Ecstasy
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

    100% agree to this!

some filmmakers seem to do this stuff and then release UTTER CRAP

best drugs ever : caffeine and alcohol, you can control them more than you would the rest and they do not alter your perception of reality ...

so if you kick ass with coffee or booze, you'll kick ass without them as well ;-)

plus I think "art under drugs" is CHEATING !

I'll quote a certain fella on this:

"Inspiration will arrive, but it has to find you working"

    Pablo Picasso

i.e.: inspiration only can come when you are being busy WORKING with ideas, not just waiting endlessly for epiphanies

lolz yeah beer goggles are an exception ;-)

my point is though, I've never written anything really awesome while being drunk... It might sound awesome that night, but the next morning it's like "what the f...!?" lol

(just like when you bang somebody who's not so pretty after all lol)

coffee on the other hand, is my drug of choice when writing or engaging in anything that demands full concentration and multi-core thinking of the abstract ;-)

FYI : I've had a few beers on the set every now and then, but never got tipsy or drunk..(believe me , it takes a lot of beer)
