    Default Color tests:HV20

    I recently bought the Hv20,
and was trying out some color tests and such for a short indie film.
Any advice to retrieve a clean color graded indie look?
Well tell me how it looks. First fooage by the way.
    I love this machine already.

    Your are a nutter!

I liked it a lot. What was the music?

Bits I liked: the phone, the blood, you. Don't take this the wrong way (it's a compliment) but you have a fabulous comic countenance, and I think you perform very well in front of the camera.

Once thing. Did you have the HV20 on auto-exposure? Learn how to lock the exposure as it makes a great difference in ensuring the correct balance as people in a scene move around, or as the camera moves around a scene.

    Great stuff.

That was fun. I love Beirut.

    Was that 24p? Cinemode?

Thank you!! most enlightened comment i've had on my projects.
I restrain from saying films just yet, for this is merely a test.

And yeah i did have it on auto-exposure. I just discovered last night the tricks to adjusting the exposure. But thank you all in all.I will be playing around with more settings.

Yeah I love Beirut too much.

    Yup, 24p and Cinemode.
I'm a little drawn to start filming in 1080i instead. Any recommendations?

Also for the other post that was asking,
    the artist is

    Beirut
    -Elephant Gun

I shall search for Beirut on iTunes later.

Regarding auto exposure, I hate the way it makes the video levels 'pump'; it's the visual equivalent of audio noise reduction (especially dbx). It's very off putting when someone walks across the scene and the video level suddenly shoots up or down.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your tests. By viewing others' work I learn how better to improve mine.

That was kind of fun actually. The music really set the emotion. I like the simple white walls in the background and the close up of the phone. That looked kind of professional.

I have to ask... is it meant to be cropped to 2.35:1 scope (as opposed to the HV20's regular 1.77 widescreen or 1.33 standard "square" television)? I don't know... but I got the feeling that it's somewhat stretched horizontally for some reason. Yeah... even the eyes is horizontally stretched ovals... Is it meant to be that way?

Quite nice images anyway... although I do have some trouble taking things seriously when people on screen just laughs uncontrollably... It takes away from the humor in my opinion... but when it comes to humor, it's individual...

Yeah for some odd reason it did seem stretched to me as well. It may be the export....??? I'll play with it. I did get a weird look on it though too.

And i agree i do have a problem with people laughing uncontrollably on film.I feel uncomfortable cause i can't find it realistic. it's not my style, and for some reason i bursted. The reason i started laughing was the bathroom is pretty much clean fluorescent white and when i spit blood it splatted and draped down all over the walls (of which is my mother-in-laws bathroom) and got on my hv20. I had no intent to laugh but as i started laughing from the walls i saw on the lcd screen my mouth looked scary so i proceed to a eccentric laugh. Wasn't my intent.

    Thanks for the comment.

No wonder replies were for one.

I re-edited and put the other up.

    I watched the other clip.

At 1:50 you're driving - how was the HV20 mounted, and do you recall the camera settings?

There as no hint of the rolling shutter's typical wobble in that scene, so your answer may be of interest to those who do have rolling shutter issues.

The camera was just resting on top of my dash,

    24fp
    Cine
and the rest was factory settings.

I notice a rolling shutter very rarely but maybe it's cause i don't do moving shots to often but oddly that shot i guess came out clean.

I like the indie look and the music you chose. The montage you put together is very very nice and love the color correction you did.

Man, every bit of footage I see from this camera makes me love it more and more. What sort of color correction did you do?

    I used

    Vegas Pro 8

    Color curves
    and Color Correction

I just played with most of the blue tints
and curves are darker in the contrast.

I don't know precisely what i had set on the correction
all the footage had separate correction individually.
I love this little machine. I chose this over the dvx100b
saved alot of money and had enough left over to buy software and
    equipment.

This camera does it's job, and well.
