Thread: EXIT 101 first feature film.

Default EXIT 101 first feature film.

Hey guys, you've all been giving me tips and help for the past few months and I've been stubborn at times and all that jazz. I've been aquiring equipment and planning and doing all sorts of things to get this production going. We were in preproduction for about 5 months. We're currently on day 3 of production and I just wanted to start a thread so I can document the progress for you guys here. We are shooting the entire feature on a bare HV40, after having wasted much time with the Jag35ST. I still don't know that I would prefer the adapter over shooting with the bare camera even if we had a proper one. At this time I would dare say I'd want at the very least a Handy35 before I ever attempt that again. We wouldn't have gotten anything at all done had we used the Jag yesterday. Thanks to everyone here for putting me on the right path! Our actors didn't question our gear at all. Both of my redheads are "dead" so I would advise against buying any. I'm going to have to return the set, and I'm just going to get some more CFL's as we have used those the most anyway.

Anyway, here's some behind the scenes photos and some stills. I'll have footage soon, when the editor gets some put together. I will also post some behind the scenes clips I did with a Panasonic GS90 during the shoots.

    testing audio

director, showing the actors what to do with chemicals

the first person to become "infected"

The Scientists! and Brenda, hair and makeup... she's doing an amazing job.

Actor Daniel young as "Dr. James Carlton" our main character's grandfather in 1969

One of the main characters "Caleb" initial "infection" just barely showing symptoms.

You stubborn? You don't know my wife!

Congrats to the progress. I hope we see more of that project soon.

If the last picture shows early stages, then I don't wanna see that guy in a progressed stage (j/k)
If your actors had had a problem with the cam you shoot with, I'd sent them home. Their job is to act - nuffin else.

you know, that only came up one time the entire day.. and it was someone who had no idea what they were looking at anyway.. She was like "I thought the cameras were supposed to be bigger"

one of the crew members said "Its HD so they can be smaller"..

    She said "Oh OK! COOL!"

lol. Hooray for people who have no clue about technology.

If someone ask, just tell him/her to have a look at Crank 2, it's a crappy movie but it has been made with a Canon HF10 AVCHD and a XH-A1 camcorder for most of the film, and it has been projected in theater.

LOLZ! I had the same thing when we changed from Canon XL1 to Sony A1 at work. One of the scientists asked "you sure, you get something out of that small thing?"

Is the guy with the white hat the Dp? or Director, or both.

He's both. I'm the Producer/writer/actor/grip/lighting/behind the scenes/promotions/equipment owner/sound/whatever we don't have somebody to do at the time... guy.

I assist him with some of the directing as well since I wrote the script. Using his expertise as a director and camera operator though. I'm learning alot by letting him take the reigns on that. I'm acting in the film, so it wasn't really feasible for me to be able to do that as well.

I hear you on that, I tried to do a lead role and direct at the same time, I found it impossible to do a good job on either front, I just spread myself to thin. So thats good you already know not to stress yourself out by doing both. Are playing Kaleb? I would like to read the script if you dont mind . Sounds like a cool story from what I gather.

Sure I don't mind. Its a fairly simple story, kind of a throwback to 80s horror where it was more "comedy" than horror.

Yeah, I'm playing Caleb. When I originally started this I was only interested in acting, and doing this was my way of being able to do more than just "extra" work without having to travel across country (living in a rural area and all).

cool, thanks man. Im in the same boat. Although there's a feature film being shot every other week where I live, they are all big budget films. And im really not into huge productions. I do it for the love of the craft. Not so much for the money. Although it would be nice to make a living doing something you love, it's not an easy thing to do. There's a lot of filmmakers out there. And some really good ones too.

If you wish to read it just pm me and email to send it to. Watch out for the typos.. I've proofread it about a zillion times but still come across some I missed!

and yeah, I'm not doing this to try to get rich. I just like entertaining people, and telling stories. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to make a living doing this stuff, instead of delivering clothes to ornery people who don't appreciate it.

I enjoyed the extra work I did on big budget films, but this is much more rewarding. The big budget "feeling" fades after about the first 3 hrs on set and all your doing is being pushed around by PA's. I'd MUCH rather work on a smaller production with a larger "job" than on a hollywood film as an extra.

When I did that wedding thing last year. There was a seasoned-pro photog there. Fantastic guy, he helped me out a lot. But when he saw my HV, he pointed and asked, incredulously, 'is that your camera?'
I said that the HV was the best choice for this shoot and that the Red would be too much hassle to operate single handed. He didn't know what a Red was, so my BS didn't cut it with him.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

I've found that the only people who would be in the "know" are the ones who know that size means 0 when it comes to quality image.

The ones who would question it, are only going off of the fact that they see "HUGE" cameras on Hollywood movie sets and believe that quality movies can't be made unless the camera is big and takes 10 people to operate.

When you know how to use it, the HVs does the job all the way.

You just have to tell them, I'll let the image speak for the quality, not the size of the camera.

Just tell your actors (if they are rude) that if Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Jason Statham are fine with working in front of small camcorders, so should they. Although it doesn't seem like your having much of a problem with it.

I don't think we need to preach to the choir. azmyth seems to have overcome the concerns of little-camera phobia amongst his people.
