Thread: Changing The Tape Settings on the Same Tape

Question Changing The Tape Settings on the Same Tape

    2 Questions actually...

Can you change the settings on the camcorder for the same Tape, or is this bad?

Example would be changing the settings from Portrait to Cinema Mode... or changing the FPS from 30p to 24p (While having some stuff filmed in one of these settings, then switching the settings on that same tape).

Also, can you re-record over recorded footage on a tape?

Example. Let's say I record a minute of nothing on my tape. Could I just re-record over this minute for something more useful. Or is it bad to do this? Are there drawbacks... or is it fun?

Thanks... and I use an HV40.

It is fine to switch between all the exposure modes and frame rates. The only thing you don't want to do is mix DV and HDV on the same tape, but even that wouldn't be the end of the world.

You can re-record, but I wouldn't recommend recording over something important. It is always a good idea to keep your tape as a backup in case something happens to the files on the computer or DVDs. As long as you're using decent-quality tapes, overwriting stuff once or twice shouldn't cause any major issues.

1 - Yes. For different framerate, yo should go with different tapes. But it's just for confort.
2 - Yes. You can record hundreds of time on a unique tape.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm wondering though. I capture from HDV Split because Vegas gives me issues for some reason. If I capture it in one file, wouldn't changing frame rates within a tape cause it problems? That's the last thing I was wondering since it's been said to be fine but I could see how that might cause it problems.

Great to know I can re-record over something I don't need, though. And there is no limit to re-recording without causing problems. I use Sony Tapes (They seem to be a solid quality tape).

Tell me why re-recording onto your footage at [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DVC-60-Premium-Minidv-Videocassette/dp/B0009HGVZW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265601215&sr =8-1"]that price[/ame]?
I'd listen to um3k, you can need your footage later...keep them as backup.
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

no problem i always record a few seconds with the lens cap on between separate recordings, the settings make no difference though.

Ho yeah, it's better to keep tapes, but there's no technical problem with re-recording.
