Thread: Antman's Short Film Contest #1 - Serial Killer / open genre

Default Antman's Short Film Contest #1 - Serial Killer / open genre

Ok, first off, I want to say to Dillon, in no way am I trying to take over your gig as the film short admin. Secondly even if I wanted to I couldn't do have the job you do. Ok, with that said, Here's my Idea to possibly add something fun to the forum.

Each week, someone will come up with a theme or an idea for the people that want to participate. There's no prize, Hopefully this will get some people out there shooting and producing films. It's for FUN

    The rules are,
    1. It has to be COMPLETE and uploaded to Vimeo by sunday evening at 6:00 pm. (we will make a page for this, and set up a poll)

    2. It has to be shot that week, you can't use a project already produced.

    3. You can use any camera, But has to be High def, for obvious reasons.

    4. Here's the kicker. It has to be made with out any swear words or obsenity.
It can have mild Violance, but nothing too gory. I want this clean so families can watch without being offended.

    5. It can't be any longer than three minutes.

    6. The members will vote on the winner. Voting will be from sunday evening 6:00 pm- Monday 6:00 pm. Where the winner will be announced.

Ok, so there you have it, I hope some people will embrace this idea, and hope it encourges some folks to get out there and shoot something.

So next week will be the first contest. I will throw out the first idea. Then each week a different person will give a new theme.

First weeks theme is: Power outage. This is a good winter theme for those of you living in a snow belt. Good luck

Honestly those aren't too bad. Im just thinking in terms of having families be able to watch. I know many of the members have kids, and I thought it would be cool for a family to be able to sit down after sunday dinner and watch some indie shorts. Just use your best judgement, and if you have to use something a little racy, no worries, there's not gonna be any disqualifications. but maybe put up a pg-13. lol

I agree with antman about the profanities. But I think farting and drunkenness should be allowed. It's hard to find actors who don't need lubricating and after my crew has quaffed back a few crates of guinness it can get pretty flatulent on set.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

lol, with halogens that could be dangerous. your crew could blow up the set.

I like the idea a lot, nice informal reason to get shooting.

"3. You can use any camera, But has to be High def, for obvious reasons."

I'm not sure I like this rule though... just thinking maybe someone might want to mess around with video on their point and shoot. Don't see a reason to discourage that, if that's what floats their boat.

Would monthly be a better schedule in general?

Im thinking eastern time zone. That was a good point I didn't even take in to consideration.

I think a weekly one would be good because it would change topics quickly, and it will increase everyone's shoot time and edit time. I know not everyone is going to participate every week, So I thought it would be cool to have it change quickly. Although this is a new idea, It may end up being more productive to do it monthly. And I thought the coolest part would be to see each film maker improve from week to week.

The clean (no cussing part is going to be a challenge for me as well) But I figure it will be fun for families to watch, and it's going to help the film maker use more elaborate ideas, and different adjetives to describe something other than dropping the fbomb.

I agree with ejolson, as i'm working 12hours/day 3-4 days a week...i'd prefer monthly...cause it doesn't give much time to shoot&edit when you work...

Cool idea! (and thanks for the compliments ).I wanna see how this first one goes. If it goes well, I'll be happy to help out with moderating and organizing things (a new poll thread every week will get messy pretty fast, it needs to be organized, like the "game" forum). Very cool idea though, I like it. I've been very busy with school lately (just started college) so I haven't been able to work on a new HD Shorts contest at all. Maybe this will give me more room in between HD Shorts contests to work stuff out, without receiving 3-4 PMs a day asking when the next contest will be, haha.

Im stoked you like the idea Dillon, I would love any help you can offer in setting something up and modding it. I haven't the slightest idea at this point on how to set up a page for this. And I know the members would love to have you involved. thanks

@ej, I totally see your point as time is a constraint with many of us. How about every other week.(two per month) Maybe this will be a good medium as to see how it works out in terms of time and being able to shoot. If two is too difficult then we can always change it to one.

Also, if anyone else would want to help organize this your more than welcome too. Im not any where near as computer savy as many of you. and would love the help. hint hint. Jboy, Mr. Bien, Seo, huey, drapeama, Tcindie, Jinwood, KingD, anyone. lol

I dont see where it would be a problem using a non high def cam. I just figued most of us use hv's, A1's and dslr's. In fact if anyone has a 16mm or super 8, I would welcome that as well. So sure, Lets keep it pretty informal, and leave the Formal real film festivals too Dillon.

How about every other week.(two per month)
Sooo.. The Power Outage one has to be submitted by Sunday this week(as in terms with the every week idea). Or the Sunday after that(for the every other week idea)?

    Sorry if that's confusing.

You must have me confused with someone else; I feel fortunate when I can decipher whether a thread errantly posted in "Questions, Problems & Observations" should be moved to the PC or the Mac sub-forum!

And here a somewhat painful confession: despite having participated in the very first short film competition at the forum, and being an 'official judge' on another, I didn't watch any of the entries for the last one! The timing was just atrocious for me (we had four separate productions of The Nutcracker come through the theatre leading up to the holidays; I'm still hearing Tchaikovsky in my sleep).

Yey everybody! The last 1 minute competition here has left a good taste and I have noticed that people still come here to watch them every day.

What I personally liked was that everybody had to do those three elements. This restriction is so helpful -sort of to 50% writes the story for me. Then it's fun to watch less perfect films because you find those three things in them all. And the one minute restriction made it possible to shoot everything in one day. Also terrific.

Thoughts about this one: Maybe the last winner should host the next round. He would make each round a bit different. He or she could then also be the judge. And what I always miss in these competitions is that the judge is totally unknown to me. I'd love for him to explain before the competition starts what kind of style he represents. Then when I watch the entries I can try to predict which film the judge will pick as his winner.

    A few spontaneous thoughts...

I like your thoughts Rockdonkey, sounds good.

@ Erik, Thats cool, But it could be worse. Just think if you had to hear Lady GAGA in your sleep. Thats reason enough for suicide.
