Thread: Does Final Cut Pro 7 make removing pulldown no longer necessary?

Default Does Final Cut Pro 7 make removing pulldown no longer necessary?

I have had FCP 6 for a long time. Capturing at HDV 1080p24 wasn't an option in the easy set up, so I captured at HDV 1080i60 and followed this workflow for a while:

Now I have FCP 7, and in the easy setup, capturing at HDV 1080p24 is now an option. Does this mean that I no longer have to go to extra steps to get the 23.98 frame rate correctly or does this camera still need to get imported at 29.97 fps?

If there's an Easy Setup missing, you can build one yourself.

I am quite interested in this as well since I recently moved on from Vegas to FCP 7.

I just upgraded as well and can't figure out if it's possible. Anyone who knows please help or link to a good reference. Thanks so much.

Well does making that custom easy setup make pulldown removal no longer necessary? Or does one still need to use Cinema Tools or Compressor or JES?

I won't have access to my FCP machine for a couple of days, but, IIRC, there is a menu with field order (or somewhere about) where you also can choose Reverse Telecine.

    Try it out.

Still no confirmation if this preset works without having to remove pulldown before editing. Anyone get a chance to try it? I would but I don't think I have the expertise to know if it works or not. Still curious though!

You still need to remove pulldown with FCP7. The HDV 1080p24 easy setup is for native or already converted footage. That setup should be present in FCP6 as well.

ya youre right, the option for 1080p24 is in FCP6 as well. i havn't used it for FCP7, but you have to remove pulldown first in FCP6.

Default FCP HV20 pull down updates?

    Hello,
I've been reading the old posts about editing HDV PF24 footage from a HV20 by using reverse telecine in Compressor to remove pulldown.

Is this still the best workflow? It is dated 2008 so I just wanted to see if there is something better.

For FCP 6 and 7, yes. Use the Compressor workflow. If you don't plan on major color grading or compositing, you don't need to export to ProRes. AIC works in 99% of all cases fine, and doesn't put as much strain on your puter.

FCP X does the pulldown automatically during import.

I have a few tapes that I shot on my HV20 and I can't remember if I used PF24 on all of them. How can I tell?

On that same note, if I do reverse telecine on footage shot on the regular HDV setting, what would happen? I tested doing reverse telecine on PF24 footage and could not tell the difference in quicktime....
